Ever Heard Of Unoccupied Vessel Accidently Drifting Away?

The University of British Columbia lost a submersible.

It had been moored beside research facility overnight

with hull barely afloat & entry access secured it went

away. I've yet to hear of its fate. Did you find it?

  1. Sounds like UBC is looking for insurance money. Boats do break from their moorings though...more often than you'd think.


  2. Check the oil fields... a perfect job for submersibles is checking underwater drilling heads and I'll bet it's already in the North Sea.  A boat like that take a 200 foot supply boat, so it's not like sticking a cigarette lighter in your pocket at Wal-mart

  3. I haven't heard about the UBC vessel but vessels drifting away from moorings is not uncommon. The tide & currents may push them away when they are not secured properly, which is probably the #1 cause of this type of incident. Subs are no different from a standard boat, they can float miles without been seen because of their low profile.

  4. Yes, I've heard of unoccupied vessels accidentally drifting away, but that one doesn't sound like an accident.
