I may be going to the Czech Republic as an exchange student my junior year. They speak german and czech and I know nothing about those languages. I'm a freshman and I've take tons of spanish before high school. Is it difficult learning in a different language? Will I catch on enough to not fall behind? They will give me a 5 hour intensive course of Czech when I arrive. But will that be enough? I'm not sure I will be able to learn anything when I go there.

  1. dont worry most young people in the Czech republic speak at least limited English, so you are definitely not to be "fallen behind". Five hours of intensive Czech course will jsut leave a mess in your head, you would at best learn to parrot some phrases.

Learn the language in situ, as you meet your new friends. don't be shy to speak, and it will be OK.

  2. Base on my experience, it's best you learn something before you go there, either germany or czech. At least the basic of those language. Because as an exchange students we have the motto: "as long as you can ask for foods, drinks and bathrooms, you'll survive in other countries with other language". Just don't forget to bring bilingual dictionary. It help a lots
