  1. I think the better question would ask if there was anyone who hadn't been ripped off by a towing company.

  2. I knew one guy that was parked at an expired parking meter.  The tow truck had just hooked up his car and was starting to drive away when the guy spotted him and stopped him.  The tow truck driver made him pay $50.00 just to unhook the car from the truck.  Still, it was better than the alternative of taking a cab to the impound lot and paying for the towing and storage fees ( which would likely have cost more than double that amount ).

  3. I'm not saying there aren't some in the business that should not be there at all, but the majority of towing companies are legitimate businesses with rates regulated by the state they are in that are not out to "rip" anyone off, despite public perception to the contrary.

In fact, I've found just the opposite, the public is ripping off tow companies.  Most states have anti-litter laws, but they don't seem to apply to people who put their junk cars on the side of the road.  Once law enforcement spots them, they order me to tow them, and I hate to get them because I know I won't be paid for it.  If a car remains in your name, it remains your responsibility, but I always hear "I sold it last year to a guy for cash, not mine, and I won't pay."  That's the few I'm able to contact.  Most people that leave their cars sit are rather transient, and never bothered to put their $200 purchase into their name in the first place.

We seem to be the garbage collectors for the highways.
