So my husband and I finally after 10 years are going to have a Honeymoon, it just wasn't financially responsible until now. He has been all over the world, I have not. I have always wanted to swim in the luminescent waters on a moonless night in the Caribbean. He said that he has been to Puerto Rico and this is not where I would want to spend our long awaited Honeymoon.

I think he is making this statement because we went to Mexico for one day and I spent the whole time crying about the little children on the street. I went into the bank while in Ensenada, drained our spending money (which was not much) and started handing it out. Slyly at first so my husband wouldn't notice but then I had a trail of very happy kids behind me. He took notice lets just say.

Do you think that this might be a deterrent from wanting to go to Puerto Rico.

  2. Hey Puerto Rico is a territory of the US. So the bad areas are comparable to the bad areas in the states. You wont see 3rd world poverty in PR. Housing projects (called caserios) are considered the slums. The only beggars will be a few druggies in the city. Its quite safe, especially for tourists.

I suggest you stay some of the time in Vieques so you can see the bay, enjoy the gorgeous beaches & maybe snorkel. The ferry is cheap, but doesnt run often. Vieques is very quiet & safe.  But I also suggest you spend some time in Old San Juan & see el Morro Fort. Fajardo has a nice biobay too(las croabas lagoon), you can always stay at El Conquistador Resort there, its very nice & close to the rainforest. Have fun :)

  3. I went to Puerto Rico last year. Vieques and nearby Culebra islands are quite beautiful, sporting (in my opinion) best beaches in Puerto Rico. Powdery white sandy beaches, pristine water. Culebra is better of the two in my opinion, particularly given toxic chemicals from all the weapon tests US Navy performed several years ago.

If I were to fault the area, it would be isolation (which you may want, especially given the amount of cars in main island). Nearby Fajardo offers a lot accommodation, but that requires a ferry ride, which isn't cheap and convenient. If you want easier access to places like Old San Juan and El Yunque rainforest, it may be better to get a place in Fajardo instead. If you don't, Vieques is quite nice.

I found bioluminescent waters to be quite overrated. The water does glow when you splash into it (e.g., kayak peddle), but the effect is very subtle at best.

My three favorites from Puerto Rico: fantastic food (especially mufungo), El Yunque, and great beaches in Culebra. Old San Juan gets an honorable mention. 3 least favorites: lots and lots of cars, feels a bit too familiar (too US-like), lame for snorkeling/SCUBA.

I didn't see any poor children on the street, although parts of downtown San Juan can be scary (cops carry big guns there). But overall, I found Puerto Rico to be quite safe (particularly to the east) and locals are highly educated (and many speak English fluently) and hard working.
