  1. conley39 has got it all in a nut shell. I suggest you walk and therefore wear some comfortable shoes. The taxi's cost an arm & a leg - leave 'em alone. Carry a water bottle and fill it up at the various water fountains you'll find in the "back streets" - a small bottle will cost you anywhere from 1 to 1.5 euro. Don't forget the suntan lotion if you are coming during the summer.

Go to see the Biennale - you'll need two or three half days - it's too much to see in a day.

Try the pizza at the Taverna San Trovaso next to the Accademia and if you are dareing enough even the grilled eel and polenta or the cuttle fish in its ink. The house prosecco is not bad at all.

  2. I recommend you use the - taxi boats to get an idea of the main tourist spots etc.

2 or 3 days is enough in time venice, if staying longer, Lido island 5 minutes away, is a nice change to relax and swim, ok

  3. There's a lot to see in Venice. Just walking around enjoying the art and architecture is good, but specific interesting places include Piazza San Marco with the Doge's Palace, St Mark's Basillica, the Correr museum, Florian's and Quadri (coffee and pastry). Go up in the bell tower for the view. See the Bridge of Sighs between the Doges Palace and the prison.

Take the traghetto to Murano to see the glass factories and Burano for the houses and lace. Or to the Lido for a day at the beach. Or take a gondola ride through the canals.

Visit the art galleries - the Guggenheim, the Accademia, or shops like the Marcus gallery (glass). The Biennale started recently - it's the oldest art show in the world. The main sites are at the public garden and at the Arsenale, but there are exhibits spread all over the city. Visit the old churches - a lot of them have impressive art work (for example, the Basillica della Salute)

On the 14th of July there's a spectacular fireworks display in the lagoon for Il Redentore. Throughout the day, boats arrive in the lagoon and people party on the boats. By the time the fireworks start at 11 pm, the lagoon is packed.

  4. I confirm what suggested by Conley 39.

Additionally, Campo Santa Margherita for a pizza out in the evening and a drink. Lots of young people there.
