Ok, I feel like the oxymoron of the century.

I've been vegan for, say, about 3 years - it's not long, but it's enough to have (or should have) lost weight. I am fat, but not the fatest person in the world.

I'm just curious if there's anyone else in my situation or was. And if you were, did you go to a strictly veggie/fruit diet or expell all the veggie burgers/fake chicken and other soy-based products?

  1. Yeah, a friend of mine is vegan and she's not exactly... thin.

  2. yes, but u should watch what u eat. some vegans i know eat a lot of junk food. even when u arent eating animal products you still need to eat healthy.

  3. I know a vegan who is large. She appears to eat very healthily and doesn't seem to eat much food.

Sometimes, we have to accept that people are not all the same, and thank goodness for that. It would be so boring if everyone was stickpins.

For what its worth, my friend is a star and very popular so her size does not affect what her REAL friends think of her.

If you really want to loose weight, then an increase in exercise is often better than a reduction in calorie intake. It will also make you feel better. Having said that, those fake burgers are not that great for you. Once a week is fine, but no more really.

If you don't feel you have the poortunity to do "exercise" then try to add in more movement to your daily life.....

Many little efforts can add up during the day - daft stuff like if you use a headset, stand up when you are on a meeting, take a walk, walk the long way around to something

  4. VEGANISM IS NOT A WEIGHT LOSS DIET.

The only way to burn fat is to use more calories than you consume.

It does not matter if you are vegan or eat meat three times a day.

  5. yes vegan does not mean you cann't become

    fat

  6. sadly more and more vegans are gaining weight due to the soy fillers that are in a lot of our yummy products. Morning Star and the like are the worst for that kind of thing. But the answer is really that sad old truth that some people are a little hefty plain and simple and the answer is usually exercise. I guess my advice, corny as it may be, is to learn to love the skin your in a bit more and if you must loose weight try yoga.

  7. Oh, yeah. I know overweight vegans. In fact, I know one person who put on something like 80 pounds in the past few years, and he's been vegan as long as I've known him.

Vegan foods can be fattening, especially items like breads, pastas, and desserts. It just depends how much of them you consume and how much or little you exercise. Plus, when I went vegetarian, I started to explore all of the new veggie-friendly restaurants in town (in NYC at the time) and all of the veggie products in the supermarket, and that definitely added to my weight gain.

The main way that people -- vegan or not -- lose weight is by cutting their portions and upping their physical activity levels. No diet alone will help you lose weight and keep it off the way that maintaining a healthy lifestyle will.

  8. If you eat a lot of fatty foods, like cashews, you will probably get fat if you don't get enough exercise.  French fries are also extremely high in fat content, so I rarely eat them.  I guess it all depends on what you eat.

  9. Sometimes Vegans find themselves eating a ton of carbs and not realizing they are taking in a ton of calories, too.  If you aren't burning enough of the calories you're taking in then, well, you know what happens.

  10. Well there is a girl in my class and she is a vegan(Samantha)....but she is fat.Now-a-days she has followed a strict diet of complete fruits: kiwi, figs, raw tomatoes, apples, melons, spinach and lots of carrots.....also of fruit juices and complete workout for 2 hours a day.......try doing this......might help you loose weight........   :)

  11. If you eat enough vegan food, you can get fat from it like any other diet.

  12. Have your thyroid checked yet?

  13. veganism is not a diet so it is quiet easy to be an overweight vegan.

i would know. i love fries. and there are plenty of calories in fries and ketchup.

  14. yes I have & being a Vegan or a Vegetarian has nothing to do with it!

  15. It doesn't matter whether you're vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore, you still have to watch what you eat.  Just because someone becomes vegan doesn't mean that they will lose weight.  There is a lot of junk food that even vegans can eat.

  16. Vegetarians-yes (too much cheese and dairy in general)

    Vegans- not so much.

  17. Yep.  I have a friend who's fairly overweight, and even I could stand to lose some poundage myself.  But most of the vegans I know are fairly thin.

Part of it is calories in versus calories out, but some people are genetically programmed to be heftier than others.
