Everton boss left to regret missed chances
Everton manager David Moyes was today left regretting his side’s missed chances after the English Premier League outfit were dumped out of the Carling Cup by lower-league Brentford.
Moyes told reporters Wednesday that he was disappointed by the result and that his players should have taken advantage of the chances they had.
The Toffees were defeated 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after drawing 1-1 in normal time. The visiting Everton took the lead through Seamus Coleman but Gary Alexander netted for Brentford to take the game
through to extra time and then penalties.
"We abused the opportunities we had to score and knew that they would keep coming and in football you have to take those chances when they come. But they deserved it because they hung in and never let
us out of the game. You have to make your own lucky breaks. I thought we had numerous opportunities. The crowd gave them a lift but we can only blame ourselves," said Moyes.
Brentford manager Andy Scott was over the moon after recording a cup shock. He took the time to praise his goalkeeper for his heroic display and is hoping for a draw against a “big club” at home in the
next round.
He said that: "We had a gameplan — we went a goal down but we kept our patience and caused them problems in certain areas. Richard [Less] was terrific. He has shown what a good goalkeeper he is. And our
quality of penalties was terrific. We want a home game, we want a big club and we want it to be on television."
Everton saw Jermaine Beckford’s penalty saved by Brentford goalkeeper Less and defender Phil Jagielka could only hit the post with his penalty, handing their Football League One opponents a victory over
far more illustrious opposition.
The away side, however, had spurned a number of good opportunities to but could not find the spark needed in front of goal.
