Everton defender worried by form
Everton defender Leighton Baines has revealed that the form of the English Premier League side is still a cause for concern.
The club picked up their first league victory of the season when they emerged triumphant over Birmingham City after a Roger Johnson own goal and a Tim Cahill header in injury-time. The result took Everton off the foot of the EPL table and out of the relegation
zone into 17th place, but Baines told the BBC that there was still work to do.
He said of the side’s current form that, "We're not going to try and kid ourselves and pretend it doesn't matter too much now, because it does. We want to be higher up the table. The win over Birmingham will hopefully give us the springboard to do that in
the coming weeks."
The England international proved to be an important figure in Everton’s win as he was the provider of the cross for Cahill’s goal, as well as carrying out his defensive duties to keep the Birmingham attackers at bay.
"The manager probably wasn't too happy with me being that far up the pitch, and would rather I had stayed back. I found myself in there and our first thought was to keep the ball in the corner, but the opportunity came for me to get the ball in the box.
If it would have been anyone else I probably wouldn't have gone for it, but when you know Tim Cahill's in there, then you know there is always a chance of a goal. It was vital for us to get off the mark. I couldn't have imagined facing the next couple of weeks
still having not."
After the international break, Everton will next play their bitter rivals Liverpool, who are just below Everton in the table after Saturday’s win.
