Everton’s centre forward, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Victor-Anichebe-c36018 revealed that he has set his sights on securing a permanent place in his team’s starting eleven during the coming season.
The Nigerian International, who made his professional debut for the Merseyside club in February 2006, featured in two pre-season friendly games last week, netting a goal in their 4-1 win against Morecambe on the 14th of this month.
However, after having to contend with his second-choice status in the team until now, the 24-year old unravelled his ambition of breaking into the starting eleven, and set that his prime target this coming season.
He told the reporters in an interview, “I think next season I need to be cementing my place… I’m 24 now and it’s the time you’re supposed to be maturing into whatever position or kind of player you are.”
The understudy forward suffered a groin injury back in September, 2011 which ruled him out of action for almost four months. He made his comeback in the team against West Bromwich Albion on the 1st of January, scoring a late goal to help his side
secure a 1-0 win.
In total, he has capped 135 appearances for the Toffees, which include 82 as a substitute – a club record.
The towering striker bemoaned his absence from the squad due to injury last season, terming it as the major reason behind his failure to become a regular member of the team. However, he hoped that he won’t be marred by any more fitness problems in the future.
After scoring against Morecambe on Saturday last week, Anichebe carried a vacant expression on his face, much to the astonishment of everyone at the stadium.
When asked to explain his reaction, the striker responded by owing his less joyous celebration to his fatigue. However, he indicated that his apparent expressions did not always reveal his true sentiments, as he is always delighted after scoring.
He added, “You don’t need to read too much into it. Inside I’m always happy to score. It’s a blessing, like it’s a blessing every time I step onto the pitch.”
