“Every generation has its stars, and Rory is going to be this one” says Peter Dawson
Chief Executive of Royal & Ancient showered his praise on the Northern Irishman Rory McIlory who is now comfortably seated at the world number one spot on the official World Golf Rankings.
The 22-year-old Ulsterman is probably the most sought after player in the sports at the moment and has pulled in a stunning season so far to claim the title of the world’s best golfer.
Dawson, who was seen talking to the media in the past consecutive days, lauded the achievements of the young Irishman and touted him to be the Tiger Woods of this generation.
He said, "It is quite indicative to me as to who the star players are; the star players are always the ones where the TV companies are very interested in what tee times they're going to get at the Open. Rory and Tiger are the two that they are most interested
in. So you're really seeing the old guard in Tiger, he's only mid-30s, isn't he, and the young Rory. Every generation has its stars, and Rory is going to be this one, I'm sure".
McIlroy, who had been trailing the former world number one Luke Donald since the closing sessions of the last year, finally clinched the coveted world number one title earlier this year, only to lose it to Donald in a few weeks time.
He regained top slot a few weeks back and is now hoping to retain the title for the rest of the season.
McIlroy had a disappointing bid in the first major event of the year, the Masters at Augusta National where he wanted to undo what he did the previous year.
Falling for a sloppy joint 40th, McIlroy is now hoping to revive his winning spree in the upcoming events on both sides of the Atlantic.
McIlroy will also be hoping to defend his US open title he won last year.
The young Irishman led the field in all the four days of the event, playing the tricky Congressional Country Club with amazing ease.
He landed a wire-to-wire victory became the youngest winner of the title after Bobby Jones.
The Open Championship will be held in July at the scenic Royal Lytham and St Annes, the venue of the 2001 Open Championship.
