  1. There is no set period, but partial eclipses tend to occur 2, 3 or 4 times a year depending on the position of the Moon in relation to the Earth and Sun. Total Eclipses vary even more from 2 to none for several years, for example there are no Total eclipses of the Moon until 21/12/2010, but this does not mean the world will end on that day.

  2. Eclipses occur about every 5½ months as the nodes (the intersections) of the

Earth's and the Moon's orbits align with the 'line of sight' between the

Earth and the Sun, and as long as the Moon arrives at or near that spot at

    the same time.

There is a maximum of 7 eclipses per year and a minimum of 2.

  3. Total lunar eclipses come in clusters. There can be two or three during a period of a year or a year and a half, followed by a lull of two or three years before another round begins. When you add partial eclipses there can be three in a calendar year and again, it's quite possible to have none at all. Lunar eclipses are visible from the entire nighttime hemisphere of our planet and as a result are more frequently observed and seem to be more numerous.

Exceptions to this lunar eclipse rule ... Between May 15, 2003 and October 28, 2004 there were four total lunar eclipses — these eclipses occurring roughly at 6 month intervals
