  1. You may find this rather interesting toward the bottom is an issue with batteries

  2. It is according to what type batteries. My experience is only with lead-acid batteries in cars, golf carts, and stand alone solar systems. I would not plan on more than 3-4 years life. Some may last longer, but capacity is much reduced with age.

  3. Battery life is usually described in recharge cycles. It will also be determine by depth of discharge. (how flat the battery gets) and how fast they are charged.

GEM claim a range of up to 30 miles. If this is means ideal conditions and dead flat batteries, then a couple dozen or so of these trips could easily damage the batteries.

In the case of the GEM ,which uses deep cycle gel lead acid batteries. If you were to travel only 10 miles between charges

you should expect 350-400 battery cycles. If you charge at shorter intervals you will get even more cycles

Judging by the prices on this site a grand sounds about right.

Have a chat to a few battery retailers they may be able to fix you up with another brand (same amp/hours or more).

Lithium Ion will cost a lot more up front (and you will need a special charger). They should last much longer and will be a fraction of the weight. Only mentioned because it could be a better long term option.
