Every man for himself – Mark Webber
Current drivers’ championship leader Mark Webber does not expect any help from his teammate Sebastian Vettel in the remaining five races of the 2010 season.
This Red Bull driver is currently leading the drivers’ standings by 187 points, just 5 points clear of Lewis Hamilton and 24 points clear of his teammate. Red Bull’s team engineer Christian Horner said that the team will not favour any one of their drivers
while their official advisor Helmut Marko admits that the team needs to keep their options open and they will “assess their championship chances” after Monza.
Keeping that in mind, Webber still insists that he will not ask for any sort of help that will affect his championship glory.
“Help from Vettel? It depends on the team. Rest assured I have not asked for anything. It's the same at McLaren”, he said.
Mark Webber began his Formula 1 journey after signing with Minardi for the 2002 season as a full time driver. The Australian performed quite impressively with the team in his debut season after scoring an outstanding 5th place in a race while
keeping in mind that Minardi was statistically the worst team in that season.
Mark managed to impress team Jaguar with his driving, earning a contract with the team for the following year. Webber maintained his momentum and gave Jaguar a solid performance by scoring 17 points to secure the 10th place in the drivers’ standings.
The 34-year-old decided to stay with the team for another season before joining team Williams in 2004. Williams gave Mark the first podium of his career for that year, enabling him to score 36 points to secure the 10th in the drivers’ championship.
He then decided to drive for the team until 2006 before he joined Red Bull for the 2007 Formula 1 season. Webber struggled for the first two years with the team, making it very difficult for him to achieve his goals. However, Red Bull managed to improve
their car and technical abilities to give the Australian the best package for the 2009 season. This year proved to be the high point of Mark’s career as he was able to score his first win this year. The Australian scored 2 wins, 8 podium positions and 3 pole
positions till the end of the 2009 championship to secure the 4th place in the drivers’ standings.
The Red Bull driver is currently leading the drivers’ championship with just 5 races remaining in the 2010 Championship. Mark Webber is at 187 points with Lewis Hamilton breathing behind his neck with 182 points. This season is turning out to be one of the
most exciting seasons in the history of the Formula 1 as the top 5 are still alive in the hunt for the championship.
Mark regained the lead after Lewis Hamilton retired in the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix. He led the season before the Belgian Grand Prix as well before losing the lead to Hamilton. However, Mark was not able to perform at his best at Monza this weekend.
The Australian finished at sixth at the Italian Grand Prix behind Vettel who finished at fourth. He believes that the team could have capitalised but ended up scoring just a few points.
However, after reassessing the race, Mark’s views about his performance changed.
“I was probably a little bit harsh after the race. Looking back on the race there is not a great deal we could have done better,” he told the media.
Keeping in mind the last couple of races, Red Bull needs to improve race starts as they struggled in the past two races due to this flaw alone.
“We need to look at it very carefully. Our starts early in the season were very good, but for a few races now they have not been,” opined Horner.
