  1. There are many possibilities for what could happen to the planet as a result of global warming caused by the pollution, and overuse of fossil fuels creating the greenhouse effect and based on evidence found by scientists which suggest the balance of the planet has been changing since the beginning of our planet meaning the earth has constently grown hot then cooled itself rapidly(ice age) suggests this could happen again if the earth gets to hot again, hence global warming could cause an ice age.

  2. I think there is an aspect that is a little counter-intuitive about this.  If you think about what causes glaciers to build, it is more about lots and lots of snow falling over a period of time.  In other words, it is not just falling temperatures that cause an ice age, it is increased precipitation at the poles.  When it is extremely cold, not that much snow falls.  So maybe a warming trend brings about a situation where more precipitation falls on the poles, building up the glaciers.  The larger the glaciers, the more heat is reflected into space, and so it gets colder.  This is just my speculation and I wouldn't take it too seriously.  Probably more pertinent is the explanation below.

What was said here about the ocean currents and the "conveyer belt" is what most climate scientists are concerned about.  It is the scenario portrayed in a recent movie where the Northeast U.S  and Europe goes into an almost instant ice age.  They have discovered that climates can change like that very quickly.  the basic idea is that the fresh water melting from Greenland and other glaciers is lighter than salt water and doesn't sink to the bottom and become part of the current going the opposite way from the Gulf Stream.  If that were to stop circulating, then so would the Gulf Stream of which it is connected.  Without the Gulf Stream and it's  warm surface waters, Europe and the eastern U.S. climates would change drastically.

  3. The fact is that the earth goes through both cycles all the time.  There have been many global warming periods as well as ice ages.  Here in Colorado (US) we laught about it since we have so much cold and snow this year, darn global warming! :) Humans may be adding to the speed of the cycles, but we can't really affect it that much.

  4. I wouldn't worry about it. They also say we are in danger w/ the ozone layer because of all the stuff we use when in reality cows farting gives off more causitive agents to effect the ozone than us and they have been around forever.

    global warming

Looks like you have you eyes open. Can’t say that about to many people in society today. Most of us walk around with blinders until a catastrophe hits, then we wake up pretty quick. Unfortunately we go blind again a few months later…

Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live 100% off of the grid and are completely self-sufficient with a 0% Carbon footprint. I believe this is the first step anyone can make “help the environment”. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.

We definitely didn't start global warming, but we definitely do contribute to it now.

Natural gas (or Methane along with other thanes) for example, is completely a natural contributer to global warming and is derived pretty much the same way as oil. ie. Matter (animal, plant etc) decomposes over time resulting in a anaerobic (hope I spelled that right) decay of non-fossil organic material / gas (natural gas or methane).

One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how it’s explained in school and the news. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, etc)

Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until they’re finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.

Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.

    1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.

    2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave length energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.

It’s pretty easy to see the results..

    Melting ice sheets & glaciers

    Floods & droughts

    Great hurricanes & cyclones

    Seasonal extremes

    Seasonal phenomena’s

    Species extinction

    New & resurgent diseases

There are many ways to stop both global warming and cooling from accruing or at least slow them down until we can discover a way to reverse it, but Stop burning fossil fuels is the biggest.

I currently own 2 converted h2 vehicles which run on 100% hydrogen and 1 EV (electric vehicle), not to mention our home is completely off the grid, using alternative energy (solar, wind, etc)

  6. To extend on kimpaks' answer. The gulf stream brings warmer weather from Mexico to northern Europe. It is thought that if the water gets warm enough the stream may 'switch itself off' and NE gets a heck of a lot colder..

  7. some parts of the world are getting colder. england is geting colder and now it is too cold to snow in england :(

  8. There are really two different issues here. The first issue is the Milankovitch cycles[1] or regular variations in the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. The Milankovitch cycles are though to be responsible to the changes that cause ice ages (glacial and interglacial periods). The next ice age will come no matter what -- because of this regular wobble in the orbit of Earth the will bring us farther from the sun. The last interglacial period lasted about 28,000 years (we are 11,500 years into our current interglacial period).

The second issue is changes that could occur if man-made global warming continues, such as changes to ocean currents. Some people believe that changes to the ocean currents will not be likely, but it should at least be considered as a possibility.

The ocean current that everyone is worried about is the North Atlantic heat conveyor. This current circulates, as in a giant swirl, warm water from the tropics and cold water from the polar regions. The fact that warm water is heavier and sinks is what drives this current.

Some scientists think that changes in ocean temperatures and ocean salinity could alter this current. Ocean temperatures have increased, especially in the polar regions, and fresh water influx from melting polar ice and increased inland precipitation have changed ocean salinity. See this article for more information: http://www.caenvirothon.com/Resources/Qu...

  9. global warming is melting the polar ice caps

when that happens, the world starts to flood because of all of the water in the north is ice.

when that hapens, after a while, water will start ti freeze like it did in the first ice age,

thats BASICLY it. for more info look in books.

two good movies to watch about this is:

    The day after tomorrow,

    and

    The Core

  10. Someone will have to help me out with the actual facts, but it has to do with the ocean currents.  It goes something like this, global warming causes the ice to melt on the poles which makes the water in the ocean colder, that cold water flowes through some major current or another bringing colder weather with it.

  11. No one even remotely credible is saying anything about an Ice Age.
