  1. Whether you are a smoker or you were not practesing any sport. In both cases, try to swim in a more relaxed way without doing a lot of effort. May be your swimming style needs some attention to know how to reduce your effort. Try to have the minimum number of leg strikes. Using your legs too much and/or too fast would consume a lot of the oxogen out of your blood which puts extra effort on your lounges. Your legs should be striking just to keep your lower part floating. All the effort should relay on your arms. Needless to say, that if you are a smoker, you should stop smoking or at least reduce the number of cigates you smoke everyday.

  2. Maybe it is because you have been exposed to things that have damaged your lungs, e.g. spray paint, smoking (from cigarettes)

  3. you say you lift your head when you breathe. try turning your head to the side instead of lifting it straight up. if i'm understanding you right, you're probably putting a lot of strain on your wind pipe when you lift your head up. if you turn it to the side you don't put as much strain on it and it makes you go faster.

  4. Breathe through your mouth and turn your head to the side.  When you lift your head up the feet sink so be sure to stay prone on the water rolling over more is fine.  Practice your breathing on the wall or a kick board.  This is catch up style which isolates each arm because you wait until the other arm catches up and tags before the next pull.

  5. Lifting your head up restricts your throat passage.
