  1. Most downloads or upgrades to programs running under Windows try to install entries into the Registry. This is the central "index" that Windows uses to keep track of the executable software on your computer.

The Registry is a very important component of Windows because it sets the order in which programs run, controls the settings for your display and holds your security information.

For malware (viruses, spyware, trojans etc.) to run they have to change the Registry in some way and make an entry in it.

Most security software will try to protect the Registry by not allowing programs from the internet to instal. Normally, they pop up a banner asking you if you want to allow something to happen.

If you know that you are installing software at the time then it is usually ok to permit the change.

If the warning appears when you are Not installing software then it is likely that some malware is trying to instal itself and you should refuse permission.

Some programmes ask you to disable security software during installation. This is because the security alerts could happen in such a way, or with high frequecy, that the installation is disrupted to the point where it can't happen. If you disable your security to enable a program to instal then you MUST switch it back on again as soon as possible.

For safety you should never disable your security unless you are installing from a propretory disc (not a copy). If you really must do it for a downloaded program then be absoluteley certain that the program is from a trusted and safe source.

This is because anything downloaded when security is Off will be accepted as Ok by the security when it's turned on - and that would include any spyware, virus or trojan that came with the program.
