Found the following statement on a website...

'Every vegetarian saves more than 100 animals a year from horrific cruelty.'

My friends always say things like...

'I care about the animals, but by becoming vegetarian(or vegan) I'm not going to change anything. So, what's the point?'. They would say that the statement at the top isn't true because animals are stilling being killed either way.

What could I say when they say this???

  1. Just find a video of the poor cows being strung up, stabbed, and left to bleed to death..The screeching and crying was more then enough to make me a vegan!

  2. 'Every vegetarian saves more than 100 animals a year from ever being born."

  3. As an Omni I quite agree with the statement.

I tend to look at it this way though.

Would it be better to have lived your life to the full and be killed in a car crash, than never to have lived at all?

Where do you think those 100 animals would go?

No market means no breeding, no breeding means no life at all.

If you take the stance that the animals should be allowed to breed uncontrolled then it would be only a matter of time before all of the arable land is used up and no food would be available for you.

Have you ever met a wild cow?

Everything has a balance - to alter one thing means everything else will be affected.

So your statement is quite correct, but you must also consider the long term ramifications.

  4. "The world must create five billions vegans in the next several decades, or triple its total farm output without using more land." Dennis Avery, Director of the Centre for Global Food Issues .

"In this era of global abundance, why does the word continue to tolerate the daily hunger and deprivation of more than 800 million people?" Jacques Diouf, Director-General, UN Food and Agriculture Organisation

    The Livestock Connection

    --------------------------------------...

World livestock production exceeds 21 billion animals each year. The earth's livestock population is more then three and a half times its human population. It's contrary to human-animal natural balance. And it is not a good news.

In all, the raising of livestock takes up more than two-thirds of agricultural land, and one third of the total land area. This is apparently justifiable because by eating the foods that humans can't digest and by processing these into meat, milk and eggs, farmed animals provide us with an extra, much-needed food source. Or so the livestock industry would like you to believe. In fact, livestock are increasingly being fed with grains and cereals that could have been directly consumed by humans or were grown on land that could have been used to grow food rather than feed. The developing world's undernourished millions are now in direct competition with the developed world's livestock - and they are losing.

In 1900 just over 10% of the total grain grown worldwide was fed to animals; by 1950 this figure had risen to over 20%; by the late 1990s it stood at around 45%. Over 60% of US grain is fed to livestock.

  5. Just don't care. I know you care about animals a lot, but the best thing you can do is say "Okay, if that's what you want to say thats fine."

  6. well It is quiet simple you think that killing animals for food is wrong so you don't want to be part of it.

Although It would hard not to sound preachy if you say it that way.

Its like investing in haliburton stocks  (they provide military contractors to the us Gov) you know that they are going to be sold either way do you really want to be part of the loop?

  7. That's not really true. It's a feel good myth proposed by pro veg sites and groups. It is suppose to be a simple math equation: number of people in the world, divide by the number of animals killed for food= number of animals killed per person. conclusion, a vegetarian saves his/her "share" of animals killed for food. anyone with a statistics backround can see clearly that this is not true.

    Supply and demand works if:

    1) the population is static. No new omnivores are born, no vegetarians convert back to meat eating, no vegetarians die, animals killed are fixed per person every year and a whole lot of other factors.

    2) the number of vegtarians is significant. But with a percentage of about 2-5 pecent per population, the number of vegetarians falls under the error range. That means no impact. If there was an impact, why are vegtarians still complaining about the ever INCREASING number of animals in factory farms and in teh number of factory farms themselves? It stands to reason that if it istrue, then the movement would be a decrease not increase.

    3) there is a limited supply, a condiion which obviously does not exist. US meat is in fact more affordable than ever outside the US. US meat, particularly beef, is heavily exported abroad, a amrket bigger than the domestic one.

The meat industry is such that is is not being affected by an insignificant number especially if that number is a group that does not support the industry anyway. People who don't eat meat do not affect the producion of meat. They are not the target of the market. People who stop eating meat are outnumbered by those who are born to meat eating, those who reverse back to meat eating or those who previously cannot afford meat but now can because of the lower price. In fact, the supply and demand theory plays a paradoxical role ehre. Decrease in demand means decrease in price. Decrease in price will eventually lead to an increase in a market sustainable demand.  Meaning again, meat is now more affordable while the market can still maintain a relatively low price to meet this demand.  As evidenced by statistics, meat demand has in fact increased despite the supposed increase in the number if vegetarians.

Feel good that you are not directly responsible for the death of a farm animal if you like. But don't fall for statistics based of myths. You don't have to have a reason or have to justify why you are a vegetarian. Your right to choose is reason enough.

  8. I always say: I don't know about you, but I work hard for my money, and I'm not prepared to use that money to line the pockets of people who think kiling, exploiting and abusing animals is ok.  So I don't.

Also, with the "You're not making a difference so why bother" thing, I say that directly because of me, there are 8 more vegetarians (people who have become veggie after me explaining things many times!!).  One person may not make a difference, but 9 will. Especially when those 9 may each go on to inspire  more, and so on, and so on.

Ignore these people who say these things - you are doing good by being vegan.  One day, the whole world will understand this

    xx

  9. Ask a person who has no food at all,, if they are worried about what they eat.

People should be able to eat meat that is cruelty free so everyone is happy. I am a meat eater and i don't think i could eat 100 animals a year that is just another false and bloated propaganda statement, I bet it's from the PETA site.

Yawn ,,, Until everyone in the world has food to eat ,,NO one person or group has the right to tell others how to eat.

  10. if everyone stopped eating meat who is going to look after all the cows and sheep and chickens etc they have been kept by humans for so long they would struggle to survive on there own you would be condemning them to extinction, although i dont agree with eating animals when they are really young humans are meat eater's so stop trying to change people let them do what they wont you wouldn't like it if someone tried to convert you to a meat eater, also where are all the crops going to be to grow everything for the world if everyone becomes a vegetarian because you would need loads of fields so you would have to get the animals of them shot to the back of the head should do it. truth is the animals we eat need us as much as we need them. so get on with your life instead of trying to put people on a guilt trip.

Ha two thumbs down already go climb a tree people will always eat meat your on a losing battle, think i'm gonna have lamb chops tonight with mint sauce yum yum. Losers

  11. I like meat and when the animals all die out I'll turn cannibal and eat the vegetarians..

  12. Yep, what others said about supply and demand. It's simple economics. If you don't buy meat or dairy you lessen the demand for it. The meat and dairy industries need not supply as much, and therefore fewer animals are killed or used for dairy.

  13. Not participating in the pain and suffering inflicted on the innocent animals is one incredibly important reason for not eating flesh foods and adopting a plant based diet.

As the torture of my fellow human beings offends and shames me deeply,  so does the torture of any of our fellow creatures in whatever life form they happen to be. Animals, no less than humans, have dignity, thought, emotion and the God given right to their lives.

  14. Explain supply and demand to your friend. Buying meat is supporting the meat industry.

  15. If enough people became vegetarians, the meat demand would drop.  Vegetarians in the US save about 1,500,000 animals a day.  If everyone thought like your friend, one million and a half more animals would be killed everyday.

  16. So many animals would not be on the earth if we didn't eat meat. I'm not vegetarian... I eat fish. I was veggie for 15 years but I feel we should support the humane production of high quality meat, and boycott the cheap c**p. If we all went vegetarian over night there would be mass slaughter of millions of animals..

People shouldn't eat meat unless they are fully aware and appreciative of where it comes from. We don't need to eat meat, but we are programmed to in times of food scarcity, which is why we like the taste. I haven't quite got round to eating mammal or avian flesh yet, as I can't justify it. But I will one day.

  17. This is the sort of person who wants to do a good deed in order to get instant gratification. How can things ever change with such a defeatist attitude? How can they live in passive compliance with the meat industry, facillitating demand,if they truly dislike it; and how can they have peace of mind if they truly find eating meat to be wrong and then continue to do so? Even if it makes no difference, explain to them about the individual's perspective.

  18. The number of animals that are bred and slaughtered depends directly on the consumer demand for meat. Every time we refrain from buying meat, we reduce this consumer demand and ensure that fewer animals will be bred and forced to suffer in the future.

    Also, ask your friends this:

"There will always be thieves in the world, even if you choose not to steal. Is this a good excuse for abandoning your ethics and deciding to engage in thievery?"

Some people will say that if we didn't breed animals for food, then they wouldn't be able to experience life at all. Here's a good response to that:

"Considering how the vast majority of farm animals are currently raised in modern industrialized agriculture, these animals would have been far better off never having been born. The best moment in these animals' lives is when they finally die, because only then does their suffering finally end."

  19. If chickens go to heaven, then Colonel Sanders, Frank Perdue and I are in deep doo doo.

  20. if fewer people eat meat it will lower the demand for it....companies won't produce more than what will sell, because of the high cost of raising animals for food.  there are almost 8 million vegetarians in the usa alone....it would be ignorant to think that those people have no impact on the amount of food produced by the meat industry.

  21. Tell your friends that if there is less demand there will be less supply and that the point is that you have morals and they shouldn't question your decision because you have every right to make it. Veggies rule!

  22. so you believe everything you read on websites?

man hitler would have loved to spread his propaganda your way.........

thats why PETA likes you people so much, so easily swayed.......

  23. No not unless loads of people stopped buying meat

    x

  24. Tell them the more people that choose a vegetarian diet, the less support the meat industry has

And they breed animals to sell, so the less meat people buy, the less animals get bred, and therefore less animals die for human consumption!

Supply and demand? less demand, less supply.

  25. I believe in Karma you eat and you get eaten, meat eaters will be born as meat in their next life....."Vegetarianism is the first step towards nirvana"- Buddha.

  26. Did someone say

"Vegetarians in the US save about 100,500,000 animals a day. If everyone thought like your friend, one..."?

Wow considering the fact that for the whole month of January, the TOTAL number of animals killed was 118,000,000. You mean vegetarians saved 3.16billion animals  a month or approximately 37billion animals a year? We are talking of the planet earth right? That's about 3 billion more than the actual number of animals killed for the whole world in a whole year!

Giving out false information is bad enough. But at least make it believable. Lying to yourself just to feel good is not advisable.

  27. Personally I think we could save a lot of animals this way. If the demand for beef or pork or what ever goes down because less people are eating them then farmers aren't going to breed as many and not as many will end up killed.  Economics supply and demand.  If demand goes down the supply will go up and there will be too many cattle, pork, chickens  and then the price will go down on the meat and the farmers won't want to breed them because they aren't selling for what it costs to feed them. So you are right it saves lives.

On the other hand,  my father would say that if I don't eat it then there is more for the rest of us.  This was always his standard line.  I believe if everyone gave up eating meat at least three times a week then they would be healthier and would save a lot of animal lives even if they don't to go vegetarian right now.  They might even save their own life!

  28. Just compare it to other situations.

The environment: If one person saves energy, it may not seem like much of a difference, but if a lot of people do, then it does.

Slavery: One person going against slavery wouldn't have done much but in the end more did and now everyone's against it.

Charity: If one person gives a pound to charity it won't do much, if a million people gave a pound that would do a lot.

By choosing to go vegan you have made a stand against what you see as wrong and have joined a movement. Hopefully as the number of people like you will grow, there will be less demand for meat which will mean less animals will have to suffer and die for the enjoyment of human beings.

Even if you made no difference at all in the numbers of animals killed, that's hardly the point... you're sticking to your morals and not letting your tastebuds rule you. If millions of people were being killed for meat (even though theres an abundance of other food) I'm sure the first thing on your friend's minds wouldn't be... 'well, by not eating these corpses, I won't change anything. So what's the point?' Hopefully their consciences will tell them that it's inherently wrong to eat people. Likewise, your conscience tells you that it's wrong to eat animals.

I do believe that being part of a growing movement will make a difference. Even if it doesn't, that doesn't mean you should just give up and give in... you may not be changing the world but at least you're not letting the world change you... that's what shows true character.

  29. i've just recently gone vegetarian (other than fish) and i just had someone ask me about that last night!

my response to him was that i understand that i'm only one person and me as only one person can't do much in the grand scheme of things. however, it makes me feel good to know that i'm doing what i can.

  30. Think about it this way....how much do they spend on meat?  Nearly every meal, including eating out.  I don't know for sure but I'd guess that one person would be spending 100-200 dollars (50-100 British Pounds) on meat per month.  That's 1200-2400 a year, just for one person. When you don't give your money anymore, these companies lose money, so eventually they will produce less.

I agree with the person who said supply and demand.
