Every year I owe the IRS, on my leave and earning statement I have less tax taking out?

Should I exempt myself and my wife or just her or leave it at zero.

  1. If yours is the only income, put "married" and claim one exemption.  If your wife also has income, then one of you should withhold at the higher "Single" rate.


  2. Do NOT file exempt - that wouldn't even be legal, since you DO owe some tax.   Each of you can claim zero and that might take care of the problem.  If it doesn't, have additional taken out of each paycheck.

  3. make changes to your W4 now, because since you owe every year you are not having enough withheld and IRS will then send your employer a Withholding Notice (LTR 2800 or 2801)to lock in your withholding at a higher rate.  Visit IRS website to use the withholding calculator.

  4. on your W-2 form file     0 single, they will take the maximum out of your paycheck and you should get a refund every year
