Question:

Every year i get a refund, and every year child support takes all of it. Will this affect getting my rebate?

my stimulus payment states that it is delayed due to further processing. I was told this is completely different from my refund which i'm obviously not getting, but if this wasn't the case i would be receiving a refund. The stimulus payment is to support the economy by being spent. If child support snags it, it will not be spent. I have already received a letter stating that i qualify for $600, but that there is a delay. Can anyone help? I am unable to get answers from the IRS number because it states they are flooded with calls.....gee i wonder why.....and can't take my call.

  1. Oh, c'mon.

You knew you owed back child support and you honestly thought the rebate was different?

As for the it's-not-helping-the-economy-because-I-d... well, dude, you already "spent" the money when you didn't keep current with child support.

If the state advanced money to your ex, then the state is reimbursing themselves.  If they forward the money to your ex-, she gets to spend it.

    And yes, it is FAIR.

  2. Of course it will!  And you can count on it being spent -- on support for your child.

The rebates are treated as any other tax refund and if you have unpaid child support in arrears it will be captured and applied against the debt.

The only way around this is to get yourself current on your obligation to your child.

  3. I'm not sure if they would take if for child support, but it is possible.

I got a notice saying I would be receiving $600, and then a week later I got a notice saying the payment was put toward the balance I owed on my regular taxes instead.

  4. The tax stimulus payments are subject to the same rules as a regular tax rebate:

    Refund Offset Issues:

The rebates are subject to the same offset procedures as other tax refunds. If a taxpayer owes back taxes, is in arrears on child support, or has defaulted on a student loan, the rebate payments will be applied to pay those debts. Taxpayers with concerns about this should contact the Treasury Offset Program at 1-800-304-3107.

  5. My husband has his refund taken every year too along with his check being garnished for the child support as a result  he did not get his part of the stimulus return either!

    Sorry! :(

  6. If your refund is taken for back child support, your stimulus check will be also.  It's treated the same as a refund.
