Everybody says about one ton AC etc. What do you mean by 'ton' in part of Air Conditioner ?

One ton AC unit = the cooling capacity of one ton of ice (frozen water)

One ton of Air Conditioning or Refrigerating is equal to 12,000 BTU/hr of heat.  I have also heard that it got its name because it is the amount of energy required to melt one short ton of ice in 24 hours (although I have never verified this definition by doing the calculations)

If an AC has 1 ton capacity, it means that if kept running continously, it has the ability to convert 1 ton of water into 1 ton of ice in 24 hours time.

The word ton has the same meaning: 1 ton = 1000 kg.
