China and India are not encouraging the junta at this point. The UN Human Rights Council calls for release of those detained in the protests including Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. David Milliband has said, "The status quo is not an option." There is an international protest to the junta in progress.

  1. I own some Burmese antiques.

  2. I bought a case of Burma-shave and I fed my Burmese python a small child belonging to a military family.

Oh and I watched "The Bridge on the River Kwai" 3 times this week and cheered for the British.

  3. So sorry to see the answers you have gotten so far. Its no wonder the world is in the shape it is. Not just because of brutes that have taken over certain governments but because many people just plain not seem to care.

Paul Buckley a famous Quaker once said, "We are not called to be effective but we are called to be faithful". Some people might use this quote to be inactive but I see it the other way around. Though we are not called to be effective but faithful we are also called to be as effective as possible. And if we are indeed faithful as Buckley exhorts us to be we will be as effective as possible.

I could give you a long list of things to do but how about just one and from there all the other things you can do will follow suit. Go to this web site US Campaign for Burma and either look up by zip code the nearest event which should be this Saturday the 6th of October and attend. If there are none in your area you can easily create your own event and invite friends, associates, and Organizations such as Church groups and Clubs. I scheduled one and already have several people who have pledged to come.

Thanks Joan for all your good work. Keep your spirits high and never loss hope and together we will use our liberty to obtain the same for others.

P.S. Here is the link for the US Campaign for Burma.

Edit: Jaime, no matter what ills the good old US of A may have freedom of speech is a right no one should have to go without.

So what is it you are trying to say anyway, bare minimum financial security and complacency should be valued over freedom? We can never truly be at peace if we have to keep clammed up inside what we truly think and feel for fear of persecution of a non democratic so called "government".

If you love Vietnam culture along with its lack of rights so much go and live there long enough while never uttering what you really think about the governments actions. But I really wonder if you are American at all. If you are you take your freedoms way too glibly. And if not... well that speaks for itself.

  4. As a USA citizen, I would encourage the Burmese to STOP!!!!  Free speech is a state of mind..  I would tell them, you don't want to be like the USA - its a dirty SEWER..  So, long as you live and don't upset the balance there, you actually live a good, happy, joyful life..  A roof, a good wife, and plenty of food. What more could a man or woman ask for?   I'm starting to realize ( About the US ) Its the big-mouths that abuse free speech.  I have been to Vietnam ( communist country ) for 6 months..  Those people didn't live any differently than me..  Their quality of life was about the same as mine or better..  Hey, a good viet friend of mine showed me his water and electric bill - $2 USD per month..  No property taxes..  Plenty of friendly neighbors and people all around.. Not like the stuck-up USA with everybody constantly exercising their free speech and wahtever other rights they can think or dream up!  ( My friend earned about $175USD a month )  Plenty..
