my hamster is fine i was just wondering why everyone says take your hamster to the vet when something is wrong. ive never heard of a rodent vet in my life. how did you find one near you? and are they called like exotic vets or did you take it to a normal vet that you would usually take cats and dogs?

  1. I have never taken my hamster to the vet (unless she looked/was sick), because all of the pets at the store are checked by vets already, on a daily basis. You'd just be spending 25-100 dollars on a simple check-up! If you really want to, look online and type this in, but with your information:

Small Animal Vets in (Your City/Your State)

I probably would get a check up, but there's really no need to unless it's sick or looking in bad shape. Good luck! ^-^

  2. very good question, what I would do is call a local vet to see if they have a vet that sees pocket pets.  You want to find one before you need one

  3. Look in your local yellow pages (telephone book), and look in the vet section. There might be an ad for small animals or, "pocket pets.' If you can't find an ad, call your local vet. They can tell you who will help your hamster. Usually, there is one vet who specializes in small animals.

  4. everyone says take them to the vet cause they don't have a better answer or the fact that that's where the animal should go.  your regular small animal vet takes care of rodents.

  5. The best way to find out if you have a small animal/exotics vet nearby, is to call local clinics and ask.

I know I've seen online listings of vets who handle rats, but I've never seen a list for hamster owners. Most who handle one type of small animal will handle them all. You can look here and see if there are any listed locally (don't be bummed if there are none listed, that doesn't mean there isn't one near you):

  6. Well, i really don't think that there's a such thing as a vet for rodents but i think you should take it to a normal vet if there is something wrong with it.

  7. Look in the phone book and give a few places a call.  I usually just call and ask if they deal with small pets.  A lot of them don't though.  It's hard to find, in my area at least, a vet that has a lot of experience with them.

  8. yes its hard to believe but there are rodent vets.

i personally when looking up vets for my non cat animals check my cats vet.  sometimes just a cat/dog vet has what you need.  in serious cases an exotic vet or a rodent vet is required. exotic vets are not as hard to find as they sound.  rodent vets on the other hand arent so common.

bottom line when their is a sick rodent check your regular vet and if they dont help check an exotic vet.
