  1. How old is the freezer?  Sounds like you either need a repair man or a new freezer.

  2. Hi,I would say your thermostat has gone, maybe easier to buy a new fridge, sorry.

  3. Try reading here to help diagnose your problem.  Several suggestions given that will help you make a decision on what to do.  http://www.repairclinic.com/0088_3_1.asp...

  4. There's not a thermostat in the freezer, so that answer is wrong. If the fridge is working and it's just the freezer, it might be something small, but then again it might be how you use your freezer. Do you open the door a lot when looking for a treat? Is it hot and humid where you are? Humidity and heat get trapped inside when you shut the door. If your melting is "surface melt" (ice cream is soft on outside, firm deeper in), then it could be the way you use the freezer.

I copied this from Wikipedia, which explains how a refrigerator and freezer works: "The vapor compression cycle is used in most household refrigerators. In this cycle, a circulating refrigerant such as R134a enters the compressor as a low pressure vapor at its boiling point. The vapor is compressed and exits the compressor as a superheated high pressure vapor. The superheated vapor travels through part of the condenser which removes the superheat by cooling the vapor. The vapor travels through the remainder of the condenser and is condensed into a liquid at its boiling point. Before the refrigerant leaves the condenser it will have been sub cooled below the boiling point. The sub cooled liquid refrigerant passes through the metering device where its pressure abruptly decreases. The decrease in pressure results in the flash evaporation and auto-refrigeration of a portion of the liquid (typically, less than half of the liquid flashes). The cold and partially vaporized refrigerant travels through the coil or tubes in the evaporator. There, a fan circulates room air across the coil or tubes, and the refrigerant is totally vaporized, extracting heat from the air which is then returned to the food compartment. The refrigerant vapor now slightly superheated returns to the compressor inlet to complete the thermodynamic cycle."

So, it could be major or it could be minor. I'd have someone who knows 'em check your freezer out. I wouldn't toss a perfectly good fridge if it is a part that needs to be repaired. I'd post an ad on something like craigslist.com seeking a handman/handywoman who is familiar with appliances (or check "services" in your local paper). $200 for a new condensor or compressor is certainly cheaper than $800-$1,000+ for a low-end new fridge.

  5. It sounds as if the condensor is shot.  Without a condensor things will not freeze.  This is a major repair job........and it would almost be better to get a new freezer.

  6. you might find what you are looking for  on yahoo.you can buy one!

  7. Either turn the cold/hot thingy in your freezer up or buy a new one.

  8. If the motor is running it may not be so bad. Pull back cover in your freezer. See if there is a solid peice of ice like your coiles froze up. The cover also may be on the bottom of freezer section if over under frig. If the coils have ice frozen over them defrost with hair dryer. Several thing could cause this one is a clogged drain line if it is this problem. Unclogg drain line weedeater line works great for unclogging drain line. Hopoe it is this and not anything major.
