  1. Get some lessons. You need to get out past the impact zone to alleviate the waves breaking on you. Once you learn how to get out past the breakers quickly, you can sit, relax, and choose your waves.

  2. what would YOU tell a boxer that was scared to fight?

i'd say take bob m's idea and run with it.

  3. It's all relative. Even professional surfer will get scared of big waves, it just their opinions of a big wave are far greater. Its all down to what you are used to.

I used to get a little nervous going out in 5ft surf but after a while i got used to it and as a result comfortable with it. Saying that if i went out on an 8ft day I'd probably be a little aprehensive about it. I'd still give it a try but if i found it too difficult I'd go in.

Part of the fun of surfing is that fear. The addrenaline rush that comes with dropping in on a sick wave and ridding it as best you can. I think this fear pushes you to progress faster (either that or paralyses you into sitting out back doing nothing). The only way to completely eradicate that fear is to only go in on days where you feel comfortable (meaning smaller swells most likely), but where is the fun in that?

Once you learn how to get past the wave it makes it far more comfortable to be out in larger surf. Depending on the size of your board you'll have to learn to either turtle role (if you have a big surfboard that won't submerge with your weight) of duck dive if you ride a short board. Both of these method, once learned correctly, WILL save you time and effort in getting out back.

When you're going for a wave positioning and balance is everything. This (like everything) is down to experience, learning to read the waves, predict how the wave will break. Remember the bigger the wave the faster it will be travelling and therefore the faster you need to be travelling - start you paddling early.

Maybe put yourself in harms way and realise that getting churned isn't as bad as your mind make out. Never panic and just remember to hold you breath.

Good luck and keep the passion alive. Practice make perfect!

Sorry if this answer was a bit heavy!

  4. when youu see the waves comming, you just have to go for it and dont stop. when you stand up, concentrate on the beach and dont pay attention to the waves breaking like 50 feet away from you

  5. Stop going surfing.

  6. It sounds to me if you really aren't ready to surf. Surfing is fun, but you have to understand that it happens in the ocean, which can be very powerful.

Before you can surf (real surfing, not just standing in the waist deep beach break), you need to be at home in the ocean. You need to be comfortable with undertows, and rip currents and sometimes big waves. Go out and swim in the ocean, body surf, and boogie board  for a while. Then when you are comfortable with that (with the big waves breaking on on you), take some surfing lessons. When that's all done, then you are ready to surf.

Somebody who is intimidated by big waves, shouldn't be surfing. You need to respect big waves, but not fear them. Take some time to get really at home in the ocean, and everything else will fall in place.

From your question I suspect that you are fairly young. I started swimming in the ocean and back bay when I was in about first grade, I swam and body surfed all the time. I didn't start surfing until I was a about 13 or 14, but by then, I was really at home in the ocean That was 42 years ago. take your time and get to know the ocean, then you will have as much fun surfing as I have had.

  7. concentrate on looking forward at the sand, and when the waves come just say to yourself "im gonna do this ", and then you would of done it just have a bit of confidence

    good luck!

  8. Let a wave break on you. I think it's hilarious when i get tossed around in a huge wave. When the wave is throwing you around and you do more flips than a gymnest... Maybe that's just me. But you don't want to get thrown around too often so learn to dive under a wave when it starts coming. It's not really a big deal, and if you're caught in a huge wave being thrown around under water, just keep calm and remember that eventually the wave will lose its power you can resurface again. But try to paddle out around the breaking waves, and do it quickly. Anyhow, the worst thing that could happen is you drowning, so don't worry too much and go out and have fun.
