  1. One of the following may be true in your case,

    1) You have dial-up connection and because you are using the same telephone line for both phone and internet, you are losing the connection.

    2) You are connected to broadbad using wireless Router. Usually wireless routers operate at 2.4 ghz frequency. Hence your wireless Router and your phone frequency (you might be using a 2.4 ghz phone) are interfering with each other. Hence

you are losing the Broad band connection. Only solution to avoid this interference is to use 5.8 Ghz phone - you would see phone labels that says "Internet friendly" on the package of the phone.

  2. The reason this is happening is because you do not have wireless internet, which means that your computer is using the same cable of the phone to connect to the internet. This also happens to wireless internets and make them lag as well but not as bad as using a landline to connect to the internet

  3. Do you use dial up?  If so, that is why it is cutting off.  Also if you are online using dial up and call waiting comes in, that will interrupt your connection.

If you are not using dial up, are you using a wireless router or modem and a cell phone? The signals could be clashing.

  4. If you have DSL through a phone jack in your wall, then you either didn't install the filter that came with the kit when you got it, or there is something wrong with one of them. When we got our kit from AT&T, it came with 4 filters. All phone jacks that have a phone plugged into them must have this filter. If you have sattelite TV, and you have to hook up the phone line to update your system from time to time, this phone jack should have a filter also. If there is even one jack that isn't filtered, when the phone rings, or your DVR is making a all to  update your TV, then it will interfere with your internet connection.

If you do have a filter on all phone jacks, then maybe one of them is faulty or has failed and needs to be replaced. I think you can get them at Best Buy, Circuit City, or any place that sells computer accessories, but call your internet provider and tell them you think they are faulty and they need to send you all new ones. They should give them to you, if this is a new setup, and you're using it for the first time.

If you have cable (like Comcast or Time Warner), there shouldn't be any reason for it to interfere with your phone service.

  5. Even if you are using DSL Internet, which shares Internet and PSTN phone on same wire pairs, using the phone should not cause loss of Internet, or vise-versa.

The cause is usually caused by incorrectly installed DSL filters or bad filters.  If filters are correctly installed, on every phone line used, sometimes putting two filters on each phone line (but none in series with DSL Modem) can improve the situation.

Otherwise, sometimes if Router is Wireless-G and phone is cordless, then RFI can occur if the phone is also 2.4 GHz phone (same as wireless G band), or phone base/remote is too close to wireless router/adapter antennas.  More separation distance between cordless phone and wireless router is better.... or change to corded phone, or change to 1.9 GHz DECT phone.
