Evgeniya Rodina secures 1st round victory against Iryna Bremond – Tashkent Open 2011
Opening the main draw of the Tashkent Open 2011 was Russian Evgeniya Rodina clashing against French Iryna Bremond. The two battled it out on indoor hard courts at the Olympic School Tennis Courts, Tashkent. The seventh seeded Rodina
survived a mid match drift 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 in 2 hours and 3 minutes.
The two had previously met once on clay courts of the French Open this year. Coming out victorious was Iryna Bremond in the first round of the second Grand Slam event of the year. This was a chance for Rodina to avenge her loss
and to everyone’s surprise she availed the opportunity.
Subsequently after flipping the toss it was Rodina opening the first round of the set. In the first two games the players won on alternate games but in the third and fourth game the two broke each other back to back to equalize
the score board at 2-2. During the following three games the players again won on their respective serves but in the eighth game the Russian broke her adversary’s serve for the last time to stamp her lead of 5-3. Securing a two break point lead, Rodina was
now serving for the set, and as she smashed two aces at 30-love, she clogged the opening set.
After taking a beating in the first set Bremond pulled her socks and took a notch higher in her performance. Opening the second set was Bremond and even though, she didn’t smash any aces, she had capitalized on three break points
and benefited from 5 more points than Rodina.
As the two players won on their own serves in the first two games the score board had equalized at 1-1. The two then again broke each other back to back in the third and fourth game but in the fifth Rodina broke back and was not
ready throw in the towel just as yet. Rodina took the lead in the sixth game 4-2 but Bremond made a comeback from two games down by breaking her adversary in the eighth game and took the lead at 5-4 in the ninth. In a reversal of fate as Rodina was serving
to stay into the game Bremond was looking to break her to seal the second set victory. By getting Rodina to double fault Bremond snatched Rodina’s chance of a straight set victory.
By the end of the second set, the two had bagged a set apiece and opening the decisive set was Bremond but as Rodina broke her in the first game, she crushed her confidence and from there onwards it was Rodina, who not only own
on her own serve but broke her rival for another two more times to secure a flawless victory of 6-0.
As Bremond congratulated Rodina the crowd cheered for both of them and Rodina was finally able to avenge her loss and equalize the head-to-head score. With this victory Rodina was able to secure a berth in the second round of the
Tashkent Open 2011, where she will be facing Japanese Junri Namigata or the Czech Eva Birnerova.
