Evgeny Donskoy battles past Roberto Olmedo into 2nd round – Madrid Challenger 2011
Evgeny Donskoy of Russia came back from a set deficit to floor Spanish tennis pro Roberto Ortega Olmedo 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday to advance into the second round of 2011 Madrid Challengers here in Madrid, Spain.
Donskoy looked a bit out of sorts as the match started but he raised his game to a higher level in second and third sets of the match to register an incredible victory.
Ortega put up a great fight, to his credit but he was outplayed in finer details of the game by a better player. Although he broke the serve twice and held on to most of his service games, he was unable to handle the pressure on
crucial points, letting his opponent take control of the match. He will be disappointed with the result after he had done all the hard work to put himself in the driving seat.
Ranked 146th in the world, Donskoy is seeded number eight at the Association of Tennis Professional tournament. He will be feeling very confident about his victory and the way he conducted himself on the court.
However, he must be cautious of the challenges to come in final stages of the competition. His first serve conversion was an impressive 72 per cent and he claimed 42 per cent of the points at the receiving end as well. He will
be hoping to continue his impressive run on the red clay courts of Madrid by maintaining his superb form.
Hitting 12 serve aces in the match, he was able to get out of trouble whenever it was required. Saving 5 out of seven break points, his defence was also as good as his attacking abilities. Despite losing the opening set, he continued
to play his natural game freely. Dashing a gorgeous forehand winner down the line, he set up three match points for himself and then converted the second one to seal a memorable victory in match that lasted for one hour and 53 minutes.
