Evgeny Donskoy blows away Christian Voinea in opening round – Open Castilla y Leon 2011 CH
Unseeded Russian, Evgeny Donskoy forced his way through to the second round of Open Castilla y Leon after defeating Christian Voinea of Romania on Monday afternoon.
The contest was staged on the hard courts of Segovia, Spain, with the Russian competitor dominating every bit of it. Donskoy took merely 48 minutes of play to wrap up victory at 6-2, 6-1, in the most comprehensive manner to advance
to the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event. The Russian absolutely devastated his opponent in the contest and gave away not a single chance to him to have his impact upon the game.
Despite of a pathetic serve precision of 34 per cent throughout the matchup, the Russian secured all the 11 first serve points he played. Donskoy’s points winning knack was outstanding in the contest and he converted five out of
five break points en route to victory, without facing a single serve break from his bleak opponent.
Voinea was led down by his huge number of unforced errors in the game, as the Romanian spilled out 11 double faults to remain on the back foot throughout. He held serve in just three games in the entire contest and suffered five
cracking serve breaks from Donskoy to finish on the losing end in a humiliating manner.
The Russian took hold of the opening set right from the first game of the match, breaking Voinea to race to 3-0 lead. Donskoy’s serve accuracy was just 28 per cent but he reeled off 27 out of 40 total points being played in the
set to remain on top of the game. A second serve break from the Russian sealed off the first set for him at 6-2, putting him into a one-set lead in the matchup.
Donskoy kept his demolition job going in the following set as well and fully capitalized upon six double faults from his opponent to inch closer to victory. He stung three more serve breaks in the second set without facing any
break point from Voinea to close out the contest at 6-1 to reach the second round of the tournament.
A total of 75 points were played in the entire matchup, with Donskoy collecting 52 and Voinea following him way behind at just 23 points. The Russian will take on the seventh seeded Belgian competitor, Ruben Bemelmans, in the next
matchup to fight for a berth in the quarter-finals of Open Castilla y Leon.
