Evgeny Donskoy outlasts Petru-Alexandru Luncanu in the second round – Siberia Cup 2012 CH
Top seed, Evgeny Donskoy of Russia, bounced back after losing the opener to defeat the world number 436, Romania’s Petru-Alexandru Luncanu, in three sets 4-6, 7-6(0), 6-2 in the second round of the Siberia Cup in Tyumen, Russia
on Wednesday.
The Russian contestant required two hours and 23 minutes to topple his rival in a hard fought contest.
Donskoy and Luncanu did not allow each other to break serve in the first nine games and took the score to 5-4 in favour of the latter. Serving to stay in the set at that moment, the Russian contender could not hold his serve and
went down 4-6.
Luncanu banged in a single ace and did not make any double fault, putting in just 48 percent of the first serves. The Romanian contestant did well on the second deliveries and returns, as he bagged 10 of the 15 and 10 of the 17
points on them respectively.
The unseeded player, Luncanu, further strengthened his position by taking a 3-0 lead in the second set. However, Donskoy broke back in the ninth and won his next serve to square off the proceedings at 5-5. The set was taken to
a tie-breaker two games later, where the Russian participant played flawlessly to win 7-6(0).
Donskoy banged in a couple of aces and 60 percent of the first deliveries, converting 20 of the 25 of them into points. The Russian national saved two of the three break points he faced and converted one of the three he received
in the second set.
Carrying the winning momentum into final set, Donskoy nailed a break in the fourth game and consolidated on it to move ahead 4-1. The Russian contestant hit another blow in the eighth one to capture it 6-2.
Donskoy had amazingly 100 percent conversion rate on his serves, winning all the 10 and entire six second delivery points. The Russian player did not come across any break threat and availed both he created in the decider.
The 22-year-old will face the eighth seeded Kazakh player, Evgeny Korolev, or Russia’s Andrey Kumantsov at the last-eight stage.
