Evgeny Korotyshkin seizes Men’s 100m butterfly gold: Day two – 2011 Swimming World Cup, Moscow
Short Course world champion and Russian veteran, Evgeny Korotyshkin displayed his smothering efforts in the Men’s 100m butterfly playoff on the final day of the 2011 Swimming World Cup in Moscow, Russia on Wednesday, October 19.
Moscow is third part of seven-stage World Cup competition, scheduled by the international aquatics sport leading body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
Korotyshkin qualified as the second best swimmer into the butterfly final behind the Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Geoff Huegill. He experienced a strong resistance  from USA’s Tyler McGill and Serbia’s Milorad Cavic, who were unwilling to surrender their efforts.
Nevertheless, the 28-year-old Korotyshkin seemed determined to elevate on the top of podium. In the first round, he followed the lead of Cavic, who completed his first round in 23.39 seconds against Korotyshkin’s 23.54 seconds.
After completing first half of the race, Korotyshkin accelerated his swim and showed his urgency towards  the finishing end. With his immaculate stroke and incredible endurance, he completed his final round in 27.18 seconds to post 50.72 seconds for gold medal.
In the meantime, Cavic faced an aggressive effort of McGill, who engaged him in a head-to-head race in the second half. Both swimmers demonstrated their gruelling efforts, while McGill remained lucky enough to edge out his strongest competitor on the finishing end for silver medal.
With his phenomenal effort, he completed his final-lap in a time of 26.82 seconds to submit 50.86 seconds on the board. Cavic remained just 0.04 seconds slower than his preceding swimmer and appeared on the podium for bronze medal by clocking a time of 50.90 seconds.
Meanwhile, the arena witnessed upsetting performances of South Africa’s Chad Le Clos, USA’s Michael Phelps and Huegill, who failed to meet the expectations of their fans and ended their swims in fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.
The session ended after the outstanding performance of Korotyshkin whereas the arena appreciated commendable efforts of all finalists, who tried hard to make their way to the podium.
Furthermore, the fourth stop of the World Cup series is scheduled in Berlin, German from October 22-23.
