Evian Masters 2012: Hee Young Park fires 65 in first round to grab the second position
South Korean Hee Young Park was more than happy when she grabbed the second spot in the first round of the Evian Masters 2012 after she posted a 65 on the leaderboard.
Park kicked off the round with plenty of confidence and made perfect strokes on almost all the holes. She did not let the searing heat rattle her, and kept moving ahead by shooting birdies.
The South Korean star parred the first three holes, but faltered on the fourth as she could not judge the ball, recording a bogey. On the next hole, Park was back to being firm again, and she shot five back-to-back birdies, strengthening her position on
the leaderboard.
The 25-year-old faced a strong field packed with several top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) contenders such as Paula Creamer, Stacy Lewis who grabbed an early lead after posting a 63, Lexi Thompson, current world number one Yani Tseng,
Cristie Kerr, Na Yeon Choi and Suzann Pettersen.
Commentators said that the weather played havoc on Thursday, as sweltering heat made it hard for most of the players to stay focused on the game. Yet, the South Korean prodigy was one of the few contenders who held their head high and did not let their nerve
overcome them.
Commentators also pointed out that shooting a flurry of birdies on the front nine swept her to the second spot on the leaderboard. They said that after Park recovered from a bogey on the par-4 4th hole, she made it difficult for her nearest rivals
to surge past her
However, American Stacy Lewis, who is seeking to atone for her last-year defeat on the same course, stunned everyone on the opening day as she fired a 63 to grab an early lead.
Speaking to the media at the end of the round, Park said that she has been working hard and has practised well in the last few weeks. “Before the Evian Masters I did a lot of work. I did a lot of workout like kayak, bike, little bit ever run, tennis.
I really enjoy it and then everything fresh my body,” the young South Korean said.
