Evian Masters 2012: South Korean Ilhee Lee performs well in first round as she takes the third position
South Korean Ilhee Lee, who was not among the hot favourite contenders for the Evian Masters 2012, displayed a solid performance in the first round of the prestigious tournament as she stood third after posting
a 66 on the leaderboard.
Lee got off to a stunning start, as she parred the first hole and drained a birdie on the next in a bid to put pressure on her nearest rivals. The South Korean star was full of confidence as she made perfect
putts on most of the holes.
The weather troubled some players, as searing heat made it difficult for them to play comfortably. However, Lee kept moving ahead by scoring well.
The young South Korean shot four birdies on the front nine — something that boosted her confidence. On the back nine, she stunned the spectators after she fired three consecutive birdies on the 10th,
11th and 12th hole, solidifying her position on the leaderboard.
Although pumped up after her birdie flurry, Lee seemed to get a little under pressure as she made a lousy stroke on the 15th to record a bogey.
Sharing her thoughts at the end of the opening round, Lee said that she did not think that she would be able to pile up a solid score on the first day of the prestigious LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association)
event. She said that she faced a little trouble adjusting to the conditions on the course, but managed to get in full form later.
Lee went on to say that she was more than happy after she displayed a better-than-expected performance at the US Women’s Open 2012, and coming to France and making a stunning start is a great experience.
“I mean, I was not really good position, I mean, to play here before U.S. Open. I play really good week. I had really good tournament U.S. Open, so I made this event. Yeah, it's like bonus,” the rising golfer
said.
“First, I feel comfortable with this year, first, because I can make card easily. Then, yeah, everything is changed for me. I can play few more ‑ a lot more ‑ events. I can play a lot more, so it made a lot
of difference”.
American Stacy Lewis posted an electrifying 63 to take an early lead. While the second position was seized by South Korean Hee Young Park. Park registered a 65 on the leaderboard.
