Question:

Evinrude 6 outboard?

Hi,

I've just purchased an Evinrude 6 outboard, and I'm having problems starting her. She looks in perfect condition, and looks like she has been very well looked after. I'm not sure what year it was made (not sure how to find out) but I do have the serial number. At a guess I would say she is less than 10years old.

I've connected the fuel line, pulled the choke out and moved the shift to the 'start' position, and made sure she is in nuetrel. I've also bought 2 new spark plugs, but she will not start! I'm at a loose end. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I'm a complete newcomer to boating.

Regards,

Lee

  1. Hi,

I have a 1962 9.5 like new condition.  When i start it though it doesnt like starting in "start".  I turn the throttle all the way up when it is a cold start with the choke or if its been out all day.  With a cold start prime it about ten times you can hear it enter the engine.  Turn the choke on, turn the throttle up. and pull the cord when it starts turn off the choke and down the throttle.  You might also want to put new gas in.  Also if it is a two stroke it wont hurt to have a richer mix.  Good luck

  2. are you adding oil to your engine? i am a girl so not very good with 4stroke/2stroke and oil/petrol ratio, but take a look at this web site..........if this no good have a chat with your local chandlers or boat club

  3. Hey...Lee...

Take the motor to a reputable dealer.

The problem may be anything from sludge in the carburater to a bad coil pack(no spark) or anything in between.

I had one with a bad coil pack (only ran for about 10 minutes wide open throttle before shutting down.but would idle for ever)

A dealer will get her going for you or give you the best advice about it and I know you can tell what year a mercury is by going by the serial number but I dunno about Erudes.

  4. i,m not going to call you stupid, but,did you not see the engine running before you bought it ???check the carb to see if there,s a build up of oil residue and if so clear the jets.don,t know specifically about evinrude but that h.p.. and that age should be 50/1 oil ratiobigger engines are normally 100/1, if not pre-mixed.try the evinrude website and troll through that for your engine no.

    alternatively, try a website .....wwwworldseafishing.com...

on the toolbar is a forum section that you can post a thread.

this is a website that is solely for the" sea people" rather than someone looking for 10 points. go to "boat angling" and maintenance and ask your question.

  5. Be sure you have fresh1:50 (2%) oil mixed fuel

In the fuel line there should be a  "primer ball", squeeze it till you feel ristriction, this to pump up fuel to the motor and be sure the tank ventilation valve is opened.
