Evinrude 9.9hp question?

Question

I found the motor in my grandpas garage after he passed. I am unable to read the ID tag because it is so rotted. How else can I find the year etc, I want to try to get it started for my duck boat. Thanks

It's a real pain to find out the year model etc on old motors. If the motor was running ok when stored, you really should rebuild the water pump first thing. It will cost about 100 dollars to get a marine shop to do it, but they will get the right parts and the pain in the a$$ will be on them. As far as starting it goes, just put a new plug in it, same as the one in it. Remove the bowl from the carb, (1, 1/2 " bolt in the bottom of the bowl. ) make sure the bowl is clean. There is a hole in the bolt, make sure it is clean and un obstructed. Put the bowl back on. Connect it to a boat tank with a 50:1 mixture of gas and 2 cycle oil, prime the carb with the primer bulb and fire it up. Make sure it's in water or has a flush adapter and water hose atached.

If you unscrew the breather which should be made of plastic( either EPDM or Poly prop you will see beside the recycle mark a date. this will probably be close to the date of the engine as it was the date of manufacture of the plastic breather.

Flush out the Carb and check for water circulation when she starts.

These were really a great motor. Shook pretty good at idle so some need motor mts. That starter speaks for its self- rember enguage starter before pulling on the cord. Their only real problem with the early ones was a recall involving the exhaust relief ports under the powerhead. Seems they would carbon over and make idle a real problem. Easy fix was drill them out to 1/4 inch. Hope you get it going it would make a great duck boat motor-low profile and all. If you want to make it a 15 hp just change the carb!

Look around the engine block top and sides. there will be a plug about the size of a nickle that may have the model number stamped into it
