Evolution... True or False??

Question

What do you think about evolution? I personally don't believe in it (how could anybody believe in anything so stupid) but I want to hear your answer.

#1-How could you believe that a tiny dot exploded and created the whole universe?

#2-Did you know that it is impossible to change the gene pool, therefore evolution is impossible?

#3-Is there anything that you know FOR SURE is TRUE about evolution??

Evolution has 100% for sure occurred on our planet. However that does not mean that everything has evolved. The theory we are taught in school contradicts itself and there is no sure way to prove it. We are taught that something can evolve from nothing, yet are not told how that nothing came about. The question will not be answered in our lifetime.

People like you who think that the idea that evolution has been occurring on earth for millions (or billions) of years, is stupid are just uninformed about what evolution is all about, and not willing to look at all the fossil evidence.   Also how could the Bible discuss evolution, when the idea would not be proposed in science for centuries.   Does the Bible describe the atomic bomb, automobiles,  the holocaust, or dinosaurs?   Don't you believe that dinosaurs existed?   I have seen numerous fossil skeletons of them.   Are the only things on Earth that exist or are true, the ones  mentioned in the Bible?

Well i don't 100% believe in it, but their is a lot of evidence supporting it. Evolution is Change over Time in its simplest form.

It affects organism in the following way.

A species population such as deer has several differences amongst them such as a mutation that increases their leg muscles to be able to run faster. Thus the slower deer well die out due to predators and the faster ones live on to reproduce.

Evolution takes a very very very long time to occur.

Another way evolution occurs is through a large natural climate change. Say a species of monkeys are living in a certain area, some with short hair and some with long hair. Then an climate change happens like the ice age and all the monkeys with short hair die out because they cant stay warm enough. Thats called the bottle neck theory.

Theory is an important word in all of this because, yes it cant be proven but its still based on science. Thats how it works at least in a very simple form

for those who say there's no proof, say why what we think is proof isn't...

where in the bible does it talk about gravity? or bullet trains? or bad 80's music? yet ALL that still exists....

genetic drift, the flue virus, germ theory, modern medicine, diversity of species, the fossil record, the fact that 99% of species are exstinct, transitional fossils and COUNTLESS others are all evidence for evolution

That's not evolution.  That's cosmology.  Irrelevant.

It IS possible to change the gene pool.  New alleles come into existence through mutation and viral lysogeny and a few other mechanisms.  Some will be advantageous enough to give a reproductive advantage to those individuals who have the trait.  You will learn about this in your college population biology course.

It happens.  A mini-dachshund is not a wolf.  There are 700 species of fruit fly in Hawaii that are best explained by evolution.

But here's the kicker:  Evolution is the best explanation for the biodiversity we observe on semi-isolated islands and archipelagoes.  The lessons learned there can be applied to continents and oceans.

There are no other good explanations.  The books that Moses wrote are not scientific texts.  Moses was not a scientist.  He did not invite peer review of his work.  Quite to the contrary.  If you read your Old Testament, you'll find that everyone (except Aaron) who disagreed with Moses ended up dead rather quickly.  This did not make a good situation for scientific inquiry in the Israelite society.

[1] this has nothing to do with evolution (it isn't even biology)! Evolution describes how life changes over time - not how the universe began. This is Cosmology.

[2] Nope. sorry - but this happens all the time. The reason there are antibiotic resistanc bacteria is because the antibiotic resistance genes are becoming more common in the bacterial gene pool.

[3] The frequency of alleles in all populations of organisms changes over time. This is known 100%, and is the actual dictionary definition of "evolution".

I believe in Evolution.  I know you don't think it's true, but please don't call it stupid.  I believe in God too.  God uses Evolution as a tool to create animals and plants.

When you say "how could anyone believe in anything so stupid," you really betray your own lack of information, or resistance to being informed. I mean, some people make an informed decision not to believe it, but they have to actively resist accepting an awful lot of quite decent support for evolution. If that were not true, there would be no controversy.

1. Big Bang Theory has NOTHING to do with evolution. It's much shakier, scientifically, than evolution, and I don't believe it.

2. this makes no sense at all.

3. Evolution of species can't be proven beyond all doubt. But evolution itself is the logical consequence of all we observe in reality. It's descriptive, like math. It isn't that it's a questionable theory; the question is, how does it actually happen. Evolution of the things we see, contains a lot of mysteries and may always do so, but we learn more about the beauty of creation, and appreciate it more, the more we begin to understand how it may work.

1/ How could you not believe it, after all the nuclear science that has been performed? A small mass is driven to explosion in a massive burst of energy. Why couldn't the Universe have started that way?

2/ It is not impossible to change the gene pool. It happens all the time. Those changes are called mutations, and they can be spontaneous as well as induced.

3/ No theory can ever be proved completely and with absolute certainty, only disproved. But have you any evidence that states evolution is false? Any irrefutable proof that would make everybody, even the developers of evolution theory, say that it can't happen?

You are thinking of the Big Bang theory, not Evolution ... and the fact you confuse the two shows that you don't understand *EITHER ONE*.   They are as utterly different as astronomy is from biology.

Second, the Big Bang theory does not say that "a tiny dot exploded."   That's ridiculous.   The Big Bang theory is the explanation for why we see today that the universe is expanding.  At this rate of expansion, the universe would have been compressed to the size of a "tiny dot" about 18 billion year ago ... but it didn't "explode".   (Perhaps you are thinking that the term "Big Bang" tells you all you need to know about the theory to be able to reject it.)

As a couple of trivial counter-examples, the reason great danes and chihuahuas exist is because we can change the genome of wolves by selective breeding.   And the reason we need a new flu shot every year is that the genome of the flu virus has changed until it is immune to last year's flu shot.

So you could not have made a more easily refutable statement!

Yes.  That things evolve.  That things have been evolving for a very long time.  And that all living organisms show clear signs of being related by common ancestry.

... don't you think you should understand what it says first?

Not one person here said there is "proof."   The only person who uses the word "proof" is you!  Everyone else says there is *EVIDENCE*.

Science deals in *EVIDENCE*, not "proof."   So saying "Give me some! I want proof!!"  just reveals a total lack of understanding of even 8th-grade science!

But if you don't care about the evidence, and have already made up your mind that evolution is False without even the slightest clue what it is, then all you're doing by coming to science forums is reinforcing the image that Creationists get to be Creationists by clinging with grim resolve to a deep and profound ignorance of even *basic* science.

That's a *terrible* argument.  The Bible also doesn't mention that God apparently uses recombination of chromosomes to create a new human being ... but that doesn't mean that recombination doesn't occur or chromosomes don't exist!

And the Bible also doesn't mention atoms, or molecules, or electrons, or photons, or galaxies, or black holes, or hydrogen, or carbon, or DNA, or all the many, many things that science has discovered.  It doesn't mention photosynthesis, or glycolisis, or meiosis, or mitosis, or frameshift mutations, or gene duplications.   For that matter, the Bible doesn't mention kangaroos, or penguins, or Galapagos lizards (or the Galapagos Islands for that matter), or amoebas, or redwood trees.  

To say that if it ain't in the Bible, it ain't true, is just a baffling argument.

Actually, I don't believe in you. How is that for a start?

#1- it is not a tiny dot, it was the whole universe compressed into a singularity. But you probably lack the education and brainpower to know and understand the difference.

2- try to tell that to people with a genetic disease

3- nothing is sure in science; only religious fanatics are so narrow minded to bring everything down to their level of ignorance

Evolution is one theory of how things started.

#1 - Is it no more crazy than believing someone just "speaking" everything into existence?

#2 - Well there's micro and macro evolution.  Macro-evolution is difficult to prove...say, ape to man.  Micro-evolution goes on all the time...say, the differing breeds of dogs, some of which were only bred within the past few hundred years.

#3- Is there anything you know for sure about the alternatives?

Anyway, everyone knows God's original plan was to hang around in a garden with a bunch of naked vegetarians.  Why can't folks believe that instead?!?!

I had s*x with my wife, who became pregnant, and the resultant baby shows it's possible to change the gene pool.  Later, a similar event occurred.

1 The same is true about GOD creating the universe so there is no point arguing about that, especially since evolution says nothing about the origin of life.

#2 It is not impossible to change the gene pool of a given geographic locale, and that is what is most important in evolution. Also over time a gene pool will drift due to random mutation and breeding habits so gene pools can substantially change or augment themselves without outside influence through migration or geographic barriers or a bottle-neck/founder situation.

#3 All central tenets of evolution have been scientifically as close to proven as possible (nothing can be "proven" in science so the word has no meaning in this context) or as you like to say it for sure, and the best plain as day evidence comes from the HIV virus. This is microevolution in action, micro in that virus does not have the same long doubling time as use so micro on that scale really is macro in equivalent terms to us. How is it that an HIV virus will respond to an anti-HIV drug for a few years, the viral load will go to undetectable levels and then all of a sudden a relapse occurs with the virus now being insensitive to the same drug? And the only difference genetically that could be found is a few base pair changes in one gene? The gene whose protein product the drug targets to cripple HIV infection or replication. This is one of many examples of selection. A less manipulated situation comes from HIV as well, where some strains have been able to cripple the immune system in different and distinct ways that the other cannot. In this case MHC expression and antigen processing. Why do different strains predominate depending on what part of the world you are in and what drug of choice they use? These are easy examples that I just remembered from my first year bio courses in college, about seven years ago. Now a grad student in bio. Here's a good one for you, why did god give men nipples? Evolution has a clear and logical answer, what is yours? Also, how could you believe that a mystery dude created everything and not concede the point that your belief is just as fantastical or even more so than the big band theory which rests on pure data. Also, who says there was nothing before the big band, physicists don't agree with you there.
