Naismith’s regulations of basketball were tailored for women by Senda Berenson in 1892. She was a physical education instructor at Smith College, and she herself properly learnt the game and tactics of basketball. In 1983, the first game of basketball was planned at college level between first and second year undergraduates. The regulations in the light of which the game was played released in the year 1899. She was also the editor of 1st Women’s Basketball Guide.
The very first inter-institutional game was scheduled between Miss Head’s School and the University of California in the year 1891. Another two teams competed with each other in 1893. In next two years, the game gets popularized through the country at college level. Stanford’s females’ team won the game against Berkeley in 1896. It was the first instance of woman inter-collegiate basketball team’s match. It was held on 4th of April.
Evolution of the game play was much systematic for women rather than it was for men. The Executive Committee on Basket Ball Regulations was established in 1905. These regulations necessitated 6 to 9 players each competing side and a total of eleven officials. Basket-ball was made part of women sports in 1924. A grand tournament was organized in 1925 among 37 teams from all the states.
The role of Dr James Naismith in familiarizing basket ball at university level is too vital. He, along with his pupils of basketball, introduced it in various universities. Among men the first inter-collegiate match was played in the year 1895.
Various varsities started sponsoring men’s basket ball matches from 1901. Often field injuries propelled the formation of governing bodies at college level in 1905. This governing body changed its name to NCAA. The women's national championship switched its name to a 2-court game to 3-court game with 6- players in each side.
A football was initially employed while played basketball and there was no specialized ball in place. It was in late 1950s that a ball was searched that can be more easily seen by the players. Tony Honk chose a brown ball for the purpose, which is in use nowadays. The main basket ball maneuvering only included passing the ball to team mates. But as making of the ball become well, dribbling became part of the game play in 1950s.
Basket-ball, net-ball, dodge-ball, volley-ball, and the lacrosse are the sports that have distinguished association with North Americans in lieu of its invention. Other ball related sports like base-ball and Canadian football have Asian, African or European links. Although there is no direct evidence as yet that the idea of basketball came from the ancient Mesoamerican ball-game. This history still could not trace the footprints of the idea of basket ball. It is known for more than 50 years before the Naismith's introduction, in the scripts and drawing of the 19th century.
