  1. Before eukaryotes, there was no compartmentalization of functions within a cell.  By sectioning off parts of the cell and dedicating those portions to specific functions, the eukaryotic cell can carry out some functions more efficiently than a prokaryotic cell can.

Prokaryotic cells do not have any organelles and are limited in size and function.  Eukaryotic cells do have organelles, allowing them to be larger. more complex, and (importantly) to specialize.  Without the ability to form cells that are maximized for certain functions, we could not have structures like brains, eyes, hands, etc.  Eukaryotic cells make it possible for different types of cells to form different types of tissues and different organs, etc.
