Question:

Evvolutionary question?

In human affairs, we often explain our behaviors in terms of subjective feelings or motives or reasons; but in evolutionary explanations for behavior work in terms of reproductive fitness. What is the relationship between two kinds of explanation? For instance, is a human explanation for behavior, such as “falling in love,” incompatible with an evolutionary explanation? Does falling in love become more meaningful or less meaningful (or neither) if it had an evolutionary basis

  1. life itself has no meaning with the evolutionary theory

  2. Depends on what angle the question is being asked? A spiritual angle or material angle. If spiritual then there are 3 modes...The mode of ignorance, The mode of passion and the mode of goodness. The two first are not where you wanna be. The mode of goodness is where you have control of all your senses and making good choices in the right consciousness. Other than spiritual I cant help ya

  3. falling in love is hormonal and chemical. The process was to ensure that there was a hunter (male) and gatherer (female) to provide for the off-springs until they reached maturity. Look at the animal kingdom, most notability chimpanzees and wolfs, both form family units that last many years to a life time for the good of their family unit.

  4. I'm not sure where your going or what you want to here?

But, humans are more complex in emotional needs and in or intimate connection to the person next to us.

I've often wondered what makes a duck monogamous when spiders kill their mates and eat their children.

Thank God we haven't "evolved" to the point of eating our young when were hungry or killing our mates after mating.

Humans are more than instinct and drive.

If I'm off base let me know.

  5. Evolutionary, or naturalistic, explanations for life, or for behaviors like altruism, or emotions like love ... do not make them the slightest bit less "meaningful."  Not one iota.

    Consider this:

Does it make your life less "meaningful" to know that you are the product of a naturalistic process called "reproduction" ... the same process used by chimps, dogs, rabbits and naked mole rats?  Is your life less "meaningful" the more we understand about how we are all the product of a sperm cell and ovum combining chromosomes to produce a zygote?   Is a person's life more meaningful if they were conceived on a wedding night after a beautiful religious ceremony ... or is that person's life worth less if they were conceived in an act of drunken s*x in the back of a car?

Of course not.   Your life is exactly as "meaningful" as you make it.   The circumstances of your biological origins are absolutely irrelevant!

Science can neither confirm nor refute the claim that a human life, or behavior like altruism, or an emotion like love ... have some sort of spiritual component gifted by God.    To believe that they do is purely a matter of faith.   THAT SHOULD BE GOOD ENOUGH!   If your faith is strong enough, then science cannot diminish it.   Showing that all of these things have naturalistic or evolutionary explanations does not mean that they do not *ALSO* have a spiritual component.

And do not dismiss the fact that there are millions of people who are atheists who have no problem finding meaning in their lives, exhibiting kind and giving behavior, and feeling the depth of true love.

All of these things are what you make of them, personally.
