Ewe Hock feels one chief coach should be running the national team – Badminton News
The Malaysian badminton team trains under supervision of several coaches and critics now have started raising voices against this practice as former badminton maestro Ong Ewe Hock stated that only a powerful chief coach should run the matters.
The prime Malaysian shuttler of the 90s, Ewe Hock gave a frank assessment and referred to China where head coach Li Yongbo holds all the powers in training and selection of the players while the management never irritates rather facilitates him in applying
his programmes.
Former national champion Ewe Hock believes Malaysia should follow this working style and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) should appoint a powerful chief coach to make all the decision regarding training and selection of players.
He said, “There should be one chief coach or even one coaching director. He should make decisions and be responsible or be accountable for it. If he fails, he should go.”
At the moment, Malaysia has a group of head coaches for both Men’s and Women’s departments. The Men’s singles shuttlers practice under the supervision of Rashid Sidek while the Female singles players follow the directions of Chi Shanrong.
On the other hand, the male doubles department is under Tan Kim Her but he has nothing to do with the female pairs as Rexy Mainaky trains these ladies while mixed doubles experts report to the head coach Jeremy Gan.
Ewe Hock believes just too many people are trying to take charge of the Thomas Cup task and he fears the end product might be ruined.
He said, “There are just too many heads. The Thomas Cup Finals are coming up and I wonder who is calling the shots on the selection of players — the management or the coaches? The coaches should know best.”
Moreover, there are also two other committees who oversee the performance of these coaches. First one is the Coaching and Training Committee presided by Ng Chin Chai while the other one is High Performance Team (HPT) which is supervising the training campaign
for London Olympics2012.
HPT is governed by four men, Datuk James Selvaraj, Wong Ah Jit, Chin Chai and Ariffin Ghani who is representative of National Sports Council.
