Ewen McKenzie sends his support to Michael Lynagh – Rugby News update
Michael Lynagh, the former Australian rugby player, who suffered a stroke on Monday night, is stable in the hospital now. Everyone in the rugby world has been sending him wishes, and now his former teammate, and the current coach of the Queensland Reds has
voiced his opinion.
Ewen McKenzie, who has been in the news recently, was a teammate of Michael Lynagh for the Wallabies. McKenzie is tipped to be the next head coach of the Wallabies but so far he has denied speculations. McKenzie, upon hearing the news of Lynagh’s stroke
was in utter disbelief and shock, and said that he was looking at some pictures from their playing days when the news filtered in.
''I was about to speak at a conference,'' McKenzie told the Sydney Morning Herald. ''It caught me completely by surprise. I had to chase it up literally before I got up and spoke so it was a bit disconcerting. It's obviously a stroke but there's
degrees and detail there I'm not privy to yet.”
Michael Lynagh is a legend of Australian rugby and he holds the records for scoring the most number of points, 911, which still stands as a record for the Wallabies. He was the vice-captain of the team that won the 1991 Rugby World Cup, and made the all
important crucial try against Ireland in the quarter-finals that paved the way for success in the tournament.
McKenzie was raising concerns regarding former players who are in the same age bracket even though they are fit and keep themselves healthy. McKenzie said, ''It's a big shock. I'm in the same age bracket [McKenzie is 46]. When these things happen to people
you know really well, it's not a good thing. Again, I don't know the background but hopefully he recovers well.''
The news coming out of the Royal Brisbane Hospital is that Lynagh is stable and his family has requested the media to respect their privacy at this hour.
All rugby players are wishing him well and the Chairman of the Australian Rugby Union, John O’ Neil summed it up for all by saying, "We all trust and pray he will make a speedy and full recovery."
