Ex-Chicago Bears WR Sam Hurd to enter not guilty plea - NFL News
The case involving ex-Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd continues in a federal court with the player entering a not guilty plea to the charges brought by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The Wide Receiver has now hired a new pair of defence lawyers after removing his previous representatives David Kenner and Brett Greenfield from the case.
Hurd will now be represented by Michael McCrum and Jay Ethington to defend his case after the FBI brought charges of drug peddling against the former Bears star.
"I am looking forward to seeing what evidence the government may have," McCrum said Monday. "I believe there's much more to the story than what's being portrayed."
The Wide receiver is currently out on bail after being arrested in December in a federal sting. Hurd was picked up from a Chicago steakhouse after allegedly telling an undercover police officer that he was starting his own drug dealing business and required
more supplies.
Hurd asked the agent for around a thousand pounds of marijuana at $450 per pound and five to ten kilograms of cocaine at $25000 per kilogram for distribution while saying that he needs the extra supply on top of the four kilograms he already distributes.
The evidence against the wide receiver is strong and his entrance of a not guilty plea is surprising because if convicted Hurd could face a long period in jail plus fines amounting to millions of dollars.
A co-conspirator was also arrested by the Police in the raid and both defendants are prepared to enter the not guilty plea when the case is taken up on an unspecified date.
The Chicago Bears who had just signed Hurd in 2011 cancelled his contract when he was first arrested and have terminated all contact with him.
The wide receiver was under Police surveillance from his time with the Dallas Cowboys when allegations of drug peddling were first raised although Hurd refuted them.
Hurd played just twelve games for the Bears and was known as a quiet personality in the dressing room. He managed to cover 109 receiving yards in his only season with the Bears making eight receptions.
