Ex- Miami Heat player Alonzo Mourning facing a lawsuit after Car Crash – NBA News
After the whole Lamar Odom car crash incident, this week saw a former Miami Heat and NBA star, Alonzo Mourning, being involved in a road accident as well. The accident involved a total of three cars including that of Mourning.
On Wednesday, Mourning was sued on behalf of William Candelario, a 21 year old college student, who was involved in the accident. Candelario suffered head injuries including memory loss as a result of the crash. The lawsuit against Mourning had been filed on account of the fact that he left the crash site before the police arrived.
The event took place on late Sunday night at around 3 am, when Mourning was returning from Chris Bosh’s wedding. The former NBA star revealed that he had nothing to do with the accident as the other two cars were already involved in a collision with each other.
Mourning initially left the scene, only to later return in another car driven by his wife Tracy. He claimed to have left the scene only after making sure that the drivers of both the other cars were okay and that they had informed the police.
Sgt. Thomas Pikul, a Florida Highway Police Spokesperson, said the investigators established that Mourning’s blue Porsche Panamera collided with Candelario’s Audi A4, but this was after the other car had already been involved in a crash with Candelario’s Audi.
"We've determined it was two separate crashes," Pikul said.
Although, it is against the law of the state to leave a crash site if a person is directly involved, no charges were pressed against Mourning until further investigations.
Mourning claimed that he had been extremely cooperative with the police and was willing to answer all possible questions.
According to Mourning, the accident had left both the cars lying in the middle of the road, with one rolled over. However, the 6ft 10in former star elucidated his innocence by stating that he was hindered by a blind spot, as he was travelling on a road which sloped upward and he could not see beyond the slope. Although he braked as soon as he saw the totalled cars, he was unable to stop in time and hit Candelario’s Audi.
Alonzo Mourning’s statements apparently seem to be in harmony with police investigations; however, Candelario has sued both drivers over the incident.
Candelario’s attorney has clarified though that Mourning had not been sued due to his healthy financial status, but because they wanted a full picture of what exactly happened and which driver was responsible for Candelario’s injuries.
