    Did they come upon this 'field of peanut butter' as they were normally grazing/basking/eating?

    OR...

    Are they fleeing YOU with a camera, seeing their reaction to a smeared field of peanut butter in their habitat, and dashing to save themselves, as they curiously encounter the peanut butter?

    But, the key word "stampede" implies flight/fright, so now it's a matter of if the plastron was wet or not, and the 'friction factor...'

    So, lay the stage... turtles are on spot X, and have to dash thru spot Y, in a panicked flight, to reach spot Z.

    It doesn't matter if it was peanut butter, or syrup, or whippped cream.  They will go exactly as quickly as their stride can propel them individually, beyond the challenge, and into the nearest body of water, and away from all afore mentioned encumbrances.

    Turtles are a good souce of calcium for other and larger animals.  They will instictively know being coated in peanut butter will make them a more tempting morsel.
