Exactly how important is Service Pack 3 to Windows XP?

I have tried to install it thee times now, and it keeps coming up with an error. I even restarted my computer before the last attempt. Is this something I should go to the Windows web site and try to re-download, or is it really not that important? Thanks!

Its not that important, in fact, I wouldnt even install it.
