  1. The individual usually worshipped ONE, but recognized that the others existed, and called upon them when needed.  They didn't go out of their way to insult any either.  The Question about how many gods they recognized though would be:

12 gods and 12 goddesses MAINLY.  There were others, and there were many names for some of the same gods.  You will find this in the Prose Edda section entitled, The Deluding of Gylfi.  It is in the Poetic Edda also.  There is also a statement in response to the King Gulfi's question "what gods are there?" were the answerer says "of the goddesses there are also twelve, of no less importance or power".

You may also get confused with the different spellings and "add gods" to the list thinking that these are different gods, ... but that is fairly normal.  Frey, for instance, may be spelled Freyr, Freyjr and a few other ways.  Balder can be Bauldur, Baldur etc, etc.  It depends upon which language and even dialect the original manuscript was written in.

  2. Between the Aesir and the Vanir, somewhere between 50 and 65. Thats gods and godesses. The Norse mythology is full of powerful gods/goddesses like Odin, Freyja , Freyr and Thor....and some minor but still important gods/goddesses like Aegir and Fenrir.

Years of reading the sagas, and other source material on the Norse culture! Interesting reading!!

  3. It's hard to say how many exactly. Different deities gained and lost popularity over the decades and centuries. But the actual Viking raiders mostly worshiped Thor, as he was the patron of travelers. Some others included, Thor's father, Odin the God of wisdom, and ruler of the gods, Freya, the Goddess of motherhood, childbirth, and the wife of Odin. Tier, the God of war, Loki the half giant God of Mischief, Loki's daughter, Hel, the Goddess of death, and of the underworld. Balder, who was said to be the most beloved of all the Gods. And Balder's blind brother, who's name I don't remember. And this is just scratching the surface. But those names should give you a good place to start if you want to research them further.
