You buy both tickets at once.  One for the flight to your destination, and one for the return flight.  It's usually cheaper to buy "roundtrip", rather than separately.

Victoria: it's not a secret any more...Round Trip (sometimes abbreviated as R/T) is when you book the departure and the return flight.  This is if everything goes as planned.  Sometimes you may arrive at one airport but depart from an airport on the other side of town. This type of travel is popular in the L.A. area where visitors drive to Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Hollywood etc as part of a vacation.   Fares are cheaper and the availability of flights is more extensive at some of the larger airports.  In years gone by you could book an "open segment : return where you would decide on a return date sometime during your trip depending on other factors and receive the round trip price.  There are airlines where the round trip is exactly twice the one way ticket. (Aloha Airlines, etc)  Nowadays changing the reservation on a R/T gets costly.  Southwest allows you company credit on the canceled flight to use within a year.   (great feature)  A rare breed takes a flight to a destination and comes back on the same plane just for the frequent flier miles.   This is complicated to explain.   Have a great flight?
