Sociology can help understand what factors in society breed crime, what sort of laws influence crime, what trends lead to decrease in it.

Sociology can also study the effects of prostitution (in particular the fact it is illegal in some countries), and whether legalizing it would eliminate some of the social problems that occur with it (crime, disease, off-the-books, illegal income, etc).

Sociology is very vast, and there are different approaches. Someone that is a functionalist would perhaps examine what role crime or prostitution play in society because functionalists believe everything exists in society for a reason, and therefore crime and prostitution must be there for a reason and may be as a whole better for society. Someone that is a conflict theorist would look at it from a totally different perspective - one of struggle, power and dominance - perhaps they'd see crime as the result of an unfair power scheme, maybe the wrong people are in power.
