  1. Having a room that represents many cultures and life styles.  You can do with with decoration, books, puppets, dolls, etc.

Make sure that your class is open to all cultures and all families.  Keep away from only celebrating traditional holidays and open your room up to families unique customs and traditions.

Another great thing to do is to allow children receiving therapy to receive it right in the classroom.  Encourage other children to learn about special needs and to see it as routine rather than different.

  2. 1. Providing a raised table that a child in a wheelchair can use for meals and table work, and putting chairs there for other children so the child is not isolated.

    2. Teaching the other children the importance of not moving the furniture or leaving things on the floor so a vision impaired child can find her way around the room on her own without risk of injury.

    3. Explaining to the other children that the child with Downs doesn't understand the rules of the Block area and helping them find ways to include him anyhow.

    4. Making sure there are lots of materials in the room portraying kids of different cultures, kids with disabilities and just plain kids. Don't use a tourism approach, just make these a routine part of the day. Add child sized crutches to the dress-ups and put a Braille cookbook in Housekeeping.

Them most important thing is to recognize that kids are kids, and your job is to make it possible for all kids to enjoy what your program has to offer. That is far different from "treating them all the same".
