  1. Actually, the most relevant theorist is Erich Fromm - he devoted a couple of chapters of his book, "Man For Himself" to making the distinction between authoritarian and humanistic consciousness.

Fromm was an exile from n**i Germany that escaped to America. He believed that the world was becoming more authoritarian in the twentieth century - which was hardly surprising since he witnessed the rise of Hitler, the rise of Stalin in Russia, Mussolini in Italy, even the rise of state influence under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and the destruction of the world that was caused by these authoritarian societies fighting for dominance over the world. An authoritarian conscience was freedom-hating, was a characteristic of automatons (he also felt we were tending toward an automaton society), and valued technology over people. These conclusions were hardly surprising - he was writing in 1957 - and the atom bomb seemed proof that man valued technology and military might over humanity; also, the US itself was more conformist back then, and the country had really rallied around WWII war mobilization and strong leadership - just like sheep might have.

A humanistic conscience was one that loved and valued freedom and love, that wanted technology to serve man rather than the other way around, and that would fight for a more human society.

Erich Fromm is not a theorist that I was ever exposed to in sociology - I had to read him on my own - and I feel that his thoughts and my thoughts are the same in many areas. If you look at the bestselling book lists in the 1960s and early 1970s, you will find Erich Fromm's books among those lists. There are existing associations today that admire his work - the Erich Fromm Society, and the Humanists of Utah. I'm glad to hear that sociology students are learning about his work today. About ten years ago, I found his books were hard to find, but I notice that many have been reprinted recently. He is not usually talked about in the academy because he was also a Marxist, and we Americans never tire of attacking Marx and Communism. Also, he was a Freudian - and many of Freud's ideas have been discredited.

  2. Hmm this is one I haven't  seen in a while  so then Ok

An authoritarian says A higher performance and a low expectancy

A humanist will say all expectancy and a higher performance. It took me a while  because I learned the higher Authoritarian and a higher authoritative when it  comes  to Piagetian theories or epistemology
