Examples of People/Things and why they cover themselves to be fitted into todays society?

I'm writing an essay for my english class and I want to know any examples of why people cover themselves, meaning that they try and stay within a stereotype or break it, in more depth to act the norm. How the mainstream would act as in magazines and hollywood.

people don't run down the street unless their wearing "running" clothes. They just walk fast. Why? Because running in public is somewhat of a social norm breaker.
